Movie Review: Test (2025)

2 Stars (out of 4)

Watch Test on Netflix

The Netflix Original Tamil movie Test has an identity problem. Trim 45 minutes, and you’ve got a taut thriller film. Add 90 minutes, and you get a dramatic series about complex characters. As it is, the movie is poorly paced and bloated with material that doesn’t square with the characters’ actions.

At the center of the story is Arjun (Siddharth), a professional cricketer whose career is coming to an end. He’s not ready for that, but he’s in a slump. The national team tries to force him into retirement just before a big match in Chennai against Pakistan, but Arjun leverages his stardom to buy time. Still, he knows this is likely his last hurrah.

Arjun doesn’t know who he is without cricket, but he’s got a life waiting for him in retirement. He and his wife Padma (Meera Jasmine) have an elementary-school-aged son Adi (Lirish Rahav) who’s desperate for his father’s attention.

When Adi struggles at school, it’s not his parents who comfort him but his teacher, Kumudha (Nayanthara). She’s a little too involved in her students’ lives, compensating for her struggle to have a baby of her own. She’s also a childhood friend of Arjun’s, though he ignores her.

While Kumudha focuses on her fertility issues, her husband Saravanan (R Madhavan) tries to find an investor for his hydrogen fuel cell invention. He’s been lying to Kumudha about having a job running a canteen, and now he’s in debt to loan sharks. If he could just secure a contract with the government, he believes all his problems would be solved — he can finally be the next Steve Jobs.

The three main characters have problems they’re trying to address individually, but it takes a very long time before the main conflict at the heart of the narrative is revealed. The inciting incident doesn’t happen until the movie is halfway over, at which point the tone shifts from low-key relationship drama into thriller territory.

Despite the long buildup, there’s little to justify why things happen the way they do. The marketing for Test bills it as a story about choices, but the choices the characters make don’t always follow from what we’ve been shown about them. I suppose the question producer-turned director S. Sashikanth is asking is what one would do when a golden opportunity presents itself. Based on what he’s shown of the characters, the answer is: not what the characters do.

For a movie with such an all-star cast, the acting is kind of flat. R Madhavan gets to chew some scenery, but it’s a long time before he does. Siddharth plays Arjun as so self-focused that he shuts out the audience as much as the people around him. Other than one tear-filled sequence, Nayanthara’s Kumudha is pretty one-note.

The standout performer is Meera Jasmine, who makes her return to Tamil cinema after more than a decade. She plays Padma as her family’s pillar of strength, the one holding everything and everyone together. It’s not a flashy performance, but it feels right for the character. Also, kudos to little Lirish Rahav, who plays Adi as a bit of a brat, but for understandable reasons.

Had Test been structured as a series, there would have been more time to show gradual character evolution — and to better integrate a subplot about the police following the loan sharks. On the flip side, shortening the film’s runtime would have added urgency to the story and made the stakes clearer earlier. As it is, Test is watchable but forgettable.

Happy New Year! I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with a ton of surprise additions to the catalog from late last month — most of them older Hindi theatrical releases from Alt Balaji and Salman Khan Films. I wrote about them in detail for my December Indian roundup for What’s on Netflix. Here’s what was added:

The new series Black Warrant debuts on Netflix on Friday, January 10. I wrote about it in detail for What’s on Netflix as well.

We’re in a quiet period for streaming right now, with few theatrical releases waiting to debut online and only a handful of Original series set to launch on Netflix and Hulu in the coming weeks. In the meantime, check out director Dibakar Banerjee’s new short film Badminton — starring Jim Sarbh and Sayani Gupta — which you can stream on YouTube or watch below:

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with today’s debut of the Original music documentary Yo Yo Honey Singh: Famous. Netflix also announced the first two Original premiere dates for 2025. Vikramaditya Motwane’s drama series Black Warrant comes out on January 10, and the celebrity docu-series The Roshans releases on January 17. I wrote a preview of Black Warrant for What’s on Netflix.

In other Netflix news, I was recently a guest on an episode of the Bollywood Drafts podcast where we ranked the Top 10 Netflix Original Hindi Films. I had so much fun talking with Suchin and Cris about their favorites — including some intriguing movies that I Whathaven’t seen — and I appreciate host Manish for having my back on a controversial pick. 🙂 Without spoiling the final rankings, here was the Top 10 list I assembled before the recording (title links go to the Netflix entry, star links go to my review):

  1. Bulbbul (2020) — ★★★★
  2. Amar Singh Chamkila (2024) — ★★★★
  3. Jaane Jaan (2023) — ★★★★
  4. AK vs AK (2020) — ★★★½
  5. CTRL (2024) — ★★★½
  6. Brahman Naman (2016) — ★★★½
  7. Ludo (2020) — ★★★½
  8. Kho Gaye Hum Kahan (2023) — ★★★½
  9. Sector 36 (2024) — ★★★½
  10. Monica, O My Darling (2022) — ★★★½

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Hulu with the addition of the Marathi series Lagnanantar Hoilach Prem.

I’m going to take most of the rest of 2024 off for the holidays. It’s a good time, too, since things look very quiet on the streamers for the next two weeks. I expect to see Singham Again debut on Amazon Prime on the afternoon of Thursday, December 26. Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 should come out on Netflix on the same day, which is also when the Tamil film Sorgavaasal is scheduled to debut.

After the new year starts, it’s time to review some final movies before making my Best and Worst of 2024 lists. I’m considering box office blockbusters like Singham Again and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, plus Fighter, Bad Newz, and Baby John (though that likely won’t stream until late February). I’m also interested in theatrical releases Jigra and Madgaon Express and OTT exclusives Sikander Ka Muqaddar and Despatch. Which titles should I prioritize? Anything I’ve left off of your must-watch list?

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thanks for another great year at Access Bollywood! — Kathy

Earlier this week, Amazon announced that the Hindi film Girls Will Be Girls will release on Prime on December 18 following after a successful festival run. I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with today’s streaming debut of Vasan Bala’s jailbreak flick Jigra, starring Alia Bhatt. The Tamil film Amaran was added yesterday, and the Rajkummar Rao-Triptii Dimri comedy Vicky Vidya ka Woh Wala Video comes to Netflix tomorrow afternoon.

ZEE5 debuted the Hindi series Maeri today.

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with today’s premiere of Vikramaditya Motwane’s thriller CTRL, starring Ananya Panday. Earlier this week, the streamer added the Tamil hit GOAT – The Greatest of All Time.

Yesterday, ZEE5 premiered the Anupam Kher drama The Signature.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon prime with the new Hindi series about social media influencers called The Tribe.

Next week could be a busy week on the streaming services. Akshay Kumar’s film Sarfira is coming to Hulu on October 11 (probably the 10th in the United States), along with the Tamil movie Vaazhai. Other theatrical releases likely making their streaming debuts on October 10 include Khel Khel Mein on Netflix, Stree 2 on Amazon Prime, and Vedaa on ZEE5, though none of those have been officially announced yet. Streaming Video News: August 8, 2024

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with today’s streaming debut of the Kartik Aaryan sports drama Chandu Champion.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with today’s addition of the Tamil theatrical release Indian 2. The Netflix Original film Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba premieres Friday. [Update: Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba is live now, and I liked it.] The sequel builds on the events of 2021’s Haseen Dillruba, so make sure to catch up on that before you watch the new movie (and check out my review of Haseen Dillruba, too!).

The charming Hindi film Dhanak is set to expire from Netflix on September 1. I really love Dhanak, so catch it while you can.

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with today’s addition of the Malayalam film Aadujeevitham:The Goat Life (also available in Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu) and the debut of the new series Tribhuvan Mishra: CA Topper. If you want a little more info on the show before diving in, check out my Tribhuvan Mishra preview for What’s on Netflix.

Big expiration date news at Netflix! Both Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion will leave Netflix on August 7, just five days after the premiere of the documentary Modern Masters: S.S. Rajamouli. It won’t surprise me if Netflix renews their license to screen the Baahubali films, but it might not happen right away. Or the films might move to a new streaming service. Or maybe they won’t.

Given that the streaming availability of movies is never a sure thing, what are your options if you want to own it in physical form? From what I’ve been able to find on Amazon, individual DVDs of Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion formatted for North American DVD players sell for $49.99 each. If you are the ultimate collector, there’s a 2-DVD set of both Baahubali films for $375. [All three Amazon links include an affiliate code that earns me a commission on purchases made after following a link.]

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Hulu with the premiere of the Malayalam series Nagendran’s Honeymoons (also available in Bengali, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu).

Streaming Video News: July 11, 2024

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with today’s addition of the Tamil film Maharaja and yesterday’s premiere of the Original comedy flick Wild Wild Punjab (which I thought was okay).

Today, ZEE5 premiered the Hindi horror comedy Kakuda, starring Sonakshi Sinha, Saqib Saleem, and Riteish Deshmukh.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Hulu with today’s premiere of the Telugu series Agnisakshi: Fire of Love and the release of the remaining episodes of the Hindi series Showtime.

No new updates to my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime this week, but do check out the recently released Original Hindi film Sharmajee Ki Beti, which I enjoyed.
