Streaming Video News: May 5, 2023

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with this week’s surprise addition of the 2023 Ranbir Kapoor-Shraddha Kapoor romantic comedy Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar. A bunch of Telugu titles were added as well, including Amrutham Chandamamalo, Rowdy Fellow, Thammudu, Three, Yogi, and the 2023 theatrical release Meter.

Weirdly, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is temporarily unavailable after having just been added to Netflix on March 15. It’s set to return May 31. A handful of Indian titles will expire from Netflix over the next several weeks, including:

Netflix also dropped the trailer for the Original Hindi comedy Kathal, which debuts May 19:

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Hulu with yesterday’s premiere of the new Hindi series Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo (also available in Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu). The service announced that the Hindi series The Night Manager returns June 30.

Finally, I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with the addition of the Malayalam film Enthadaa Saji and the debut of the new comedy special Biswa Kalyan Rath’s Mood Kharaab. Amazon released the trailer for the Hindi thriller series Dahaad, which premieres May 12. It looks pretty good:

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with today’s premiere of the new Original Hindi vampire series Tooth Pari: When Love Bites, along with the additions of the Telugu films Ready and Satya 2. Season 3 of the reality series Indian Matchmaking debuts tomorrow. (FYI, the creators of Indian Matchmaking just announced a spin-off series — Jewish Matchmaking.)

Next week will be busy for Netflix. Be on the lookout for the 2023 Telugu movie Dasara to join the service on April 26, followed by a trio of Dharma Productions titles on April 28: Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (which was OK), Badrinath Ki Dulhania (which was bad), and OK Jaanu (which was good).

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with the additions of the Malayalam movie Vellari Pattanam and the true crime series Dancing on the Grave.

Finally, I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Hulu with the debut of Season 2 of the Tamil series Kana Kaanum Kaalangal.

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with today’s debut of the lavish Hindi period drama Jubilee. The first four episodes released today, with four more episodes to follow on April 14 (the afternoon of April 13 in the United States).

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Hulu with the streaming premiere of the Malayalam film Romancham. It’s also available in Tamil and Telugu.

Finally, I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with the additions of the older Telugu films Andala Rakshasi and Kamalatho Naa Prayanam and the debut of the new reality dating series IRL: In Real Love. If that’s not enough romance reality for you, Netflix dropped the trailer for Season 3 of Indian Matchmaking, which releases April 21:

It’s also last call for the following Hindi films set to expire on Tuesday, April 11: Dil, Disco Dancer, Fida, The Legend of Bhagat Singh, Phir Hera Pheri, and Hunterrr, which was just okay.

Yesterday, Netflix added the 2023 Malayalam film Rekha to streaming and announced the new Original sports documentary Caught Out: Crime. Corruption. Cricket., which debuts March 17:

Streaming Video News: February 9, 2023

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with today’s premiere of Raj & DK’s brand new series Farzi (“Fakes“), starring Shahid Kapoor in his streaming debut.

While weeding inactive links from my Amazon Prime list, I noticed that a handful of Dharma Productions movies are not currently available (at least not in the United States), including Kapoor & Sons, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein, Shaandaar, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. I’m assuming their absence just temporary, but we’ll have to wait and see.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Hulu with the 2022 Telugu film Raajahyogam and the premiere of the Telugu series Hansika’s Love Shaadi Drama, which is also available in English, Hindi, and Tamil.

Earlier in the week, I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with the 2023 Tamil film Thunivu, which is also available in Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, and Telugu (as “Tegimpu“). It sounds like we’ll be getting a new trailer for the Netflix Original series Rana Naidu next week, and hopefully a release date.

Streaming Video News: January 20, 2023

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with today’s premiere of the new Hindi spy thriller Mission Majnu, starring Sidharth Malhotra. Earlier in the week, the Malayalam film Kaapa became available for streaming, and the Telugu movie Dhamaka becomes available tomorrow.

Netflix announced earlier this week that it secured the rights to a slate of 18 Tamil movies and 16 Telugu movies that will stream on the service after their theatrical release. Netflix has long been criticized for its heavily Hindi-focused catalog, and this is a strong statement about the company’s desire to expand its Indian offerings into other languages.

This week’s other new direct-to-streaming Hindi film is the comedy Chhatriwali on Zee5.

I’m planning to review Mission Majnu and Chhatriwali next week. Today and tomorrow, I’m catching up on movies so I can vote in the annual Online Film Critics Society awards. The winners will be announced on January 23. This year’s list of nominees contains some really, really good movies, including RRR, which is nominated in three categories.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with yesterday’s debut of the documentary series Cinema Marte Dum Tak, which covers cult films from the 1990s. Gunda is featured, so obviously I have to watch it at some point.

Finally, I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Hulu with the addition of the 2022 Marathi film Sarsenapati Hambirrao and the debut of Season 2 of the Telugu series Jhansi (also available in Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, and Tamil). Hulu/Disney+Hotstar just released the trailer for the new Anil Kapoor-Aditya Roy Kapur series The Night Manager, which premieres February 17:

Streaming Video News: December 16, 2022

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with a bunch of recently added titles, including today’s premiere of the Original true crime series Indian Predator: Beast of Bangalore. Two Hindi theatrical releases — Parineeti Chopra’s thriller Code Name: Tiranga and Ayushmann Khurrana’s social issue picture Doctor G — were added in the last week, along with nine other movies:

There are a lot of movies still to come to Netflix before the end of December, so head to my Netflix page to see the titles we already know about. I’m half-expecting to see one more big Hindi theatrical release debut on the service during Christmas break, but that’s just a hunch.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Hulu with yesterday’s premiere of the comedy Govinda Naam Mera, starring Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar, and Kiara Advani.

Finally, I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with yesterday’s debut of the new Hindi family series Half Pants Full Pants.

Streaming Video News: October 21, 2022

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with yesterday’s addition of the Tamil family film Senior Super Heroes. Look for the Telugu movie Krishna Vrinda Vihari to become available for streaming some time tomorrow afternoon. And just a reminder that tons of Hindi flicks are set to leave Netflix on November 1, so plan your weekend viewing accordingly.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with yesterday’s additions of the Marathi film Boyz 3 and a third season of Four More Shots Please!.

Finally, I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Hulu with the addition of the 2012 flick Filmistaan, which I really enjoyed.

One note about Hulu is that it seems like they’re the streaming service with the most disparate regional restrictions on marquee content. With some regularity, stuff that they promote on their social media channels is ultimately available in India, but not in the United States. For example, Liger is now streaming in Hindi in India, but not here. [Update: Liger in Hindi was added to Hulu over the weekend. I guess the other lesson is: stuff isn’t added to Hulu as quickly as it’s added to Disney+Hotstar.]

Plenty of titles are available on Amazon Prime in India that aren’t free with Prime in the US, but they aren’t usually titles that are promoted in advance. All this is just to say that, while I try to be accurate in the “Coming Soon” section on each of my three streaming pages, don’t be surprised if some titles mentioned on the Hulu page never make their way to the USA.

Streaming Video News: August 11, 2022

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with today’s addition of the Taapsee Pannu sports biopic Shabaash Mithu. Yesterday marked the debut of Indian Matchmaking Season 2 and the return of Season 1 villain Aparna. A new season of Never Have I Ever drops on Friday, followed by the Hindi action movie Nikamma on Saturday.

Netflix India announced the details on their slate of non-fiction content set to debut before the end of 2022, including release dates for two of the titles. Season 2 of The Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives launches on September 2, and the second entry in the Indian Predator series — The Diary of a Serial Killer — comes out September 7.  Other titles mentioned in the reveal video (embedded below) include the previously announced series Social Currency, the new series IRL: In Real Love, and two new documentaries — Mumbai Mafia: Police vs The Underworld and Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with today’s debut of Mind the Malhotras Season 2. Other new additions this week include Malayankunju (Malayalam) and Thank You (Telugu).

Finally, I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Hulu with today’s premiere of the Tamil film Cadaver (also available in Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, and Telugu). Another new addition to Hulu this week is the Telugu movie The Warriorr.

Bonus: Aditya Roy Kapur’s action flick Rashtra Kavach Om is now streaming on Zee5.
