Best Bollywood Movies of 2025

Time to take a final look back at last year with my Best Bollywood Movies of 2025 list. The Hindi film industry has gotten bashed recently for a lack of quality titles, but last year produced a bunch of terrific movies.

As a side note, I’ve decided not to do a Worst Bollywood Movies of 2025 list. There are just too many common things that are wrong year after year — sexism, jingoism, unfunny romantic comedies that don’t recognize their own toxicity — to warrant a brand new list. I will say that my three least favorite films of 2025 can all be found on my list of Bollywood movies on Hulu.

Back to the good stuff. Here are my Top 10 Bollywood Movies of 2025, counting down from number 10.

The year’s biggest overachiever is the crime drama Bhagwat Chapter One: Raakshas. Arshad Warsi portrays the rare Hindi-cinema cop who is flawed but working on improving himself, making his own personal journey as compelling as the mystery he’s trying to solve. Running his story parallel to a romantic subplot is clever and keeps the audience guessing as to how it ties in to the main story. This was way better than I expected it to be.

Saiyaara didn’t wind up the year’s surprise box office hit for nothing. Overwrought, youthful romances used to be much more commonplace, and this engrossing drama reminds everyone why that was the case. What a treat to be introduced to two talented young lead actors — Aneet Padda and Ahaan Panday — who will undoubtedly be the stars of the future.

Most Hindi films set in Kashmir are war stories, but director Danish Renzu’s Songs of Paradise offers a refreshing change of pace. This gentle movie about a trailblazing woman in Kashmiri music history is a delight to watch.

Though it premiered at festivals in 2024, Humans in the Loop first got a wide release on Netflix in 2025, so I’m counting it here. Like Songs of Paradise, Humans in the Loop takes a quiet, focused approach to telling the stories of the Indian women who make AI possible.

In contrast, Dhoom Dhaam is a raucous adventure about an interrupted honeymoon. Yami Gautam Dhar and Pratik Gandhi are a ton of fun as a newly married couple who have a lot to learn about one another.

I adored the 2008 documentary Supermen of Malegaon, and director Reema Kagti’s fictional version of that film — Superboys of Malegaon — is a fitting tribute. It’s a perfect movie for anyone who loves movies.

Probably the biggest surprise of the year was Stolen, a film that excels as both a taut action thriller and an astute commentary on wealth inequality and institutional shortcomings. Director Keran Tejpal’s kidnapping drama is the best rural thriller since NH10, which is saying a lot.

Like Humans in the Loop, Mrs. is another film that finally got its wide release in 2025 after playing at festivals. The wait was worth it. Sanya Malhotra shines in this story of a new wife slowly crushed under the impossible expectations of her husband and father-in-law. It’s a poignant depiction of how abusers disguise their actions while still exercising control — and the resilience it takes to escape such an oppressive situation.

It made perfect sense when Homebound was selected as India’s official submission to the Oscars for Best International Feature Film. It’s a moving portrayal of two friends trying to escape poverty, only to run up against prolonged COVID business closures right as they start to make real money. Homebound captures an important moment in history while giving us characters we come to truly care about.

My favorite Hindi film of the year might also be the strangest (well, that honor might go to Crazxy). Another tale of an unhappy newlywed bride, this one takes a bizarre and hilarious turn that succeeds entirely thanks to a career-best performance from Radhika Apte. The Best Bollywood Movie of 2025 is Sister Midnight. Thank goodness this actually got a wide release and didn’t disappear after its festival run in 2024. I love this bonkers film.

Streaming Video News: July 3, 2025

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with today’s world premiere of the Amazon Original Telugu comedy Uppu Kappurambu.

Today, ZEE5 premiered Abhishek Bachchan’s new film Kaalidhar Laapata, a remake of the 2019 Tamil movie K.D.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with yesterday’s streaming debut of Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film Thug Life. If you missed any of the Indian content added to Netflix in June, check out my monthly recap for What’s on Netflix. While you’re there, check out my list of reality game shows to watch on Netflix if you’re a fan of the games in Squid Game. I’m proud of it.

There’s no sign of the new Hotstar Indian Original shows Good Wife or Mistry on Hulu, which is par for the course these days. But, hey, they just added the 1987 film Imaandaar, so that’s something.

Since we’re at the mid-point of the year — and there’s not much new to watch on a holiday weekend — here are my Top 5 films of 2025 so far (with the caveat that I haven’t seen any of the Hindi theatrical releases from May or June yet):

Movie Review: Stolen (2025)

3.5 Stars (out of 4)

Watch Stolen on Amazon Prime

Two brothers are drawn into a kidnapping case in the gripping drama Stolen. This is the most intense Hindi rural thriller since Anushka Sharma’s brilliant NH10.

Jhumpa (Mia Maelzer) sleeps on a bench at a train station with her 5-month-old baby Champa when another woman quietly grabs the infant and makes off with her. Jhumpa wakes moments later to find the baby missing, and no one on the platform saw anything. The only potential suspect is a man holding Champa’s hat.

The man with the hat is Raman (Shubham Vardhan), who just stepped off the train and is late to his mother’s wedding in the city. The delay means Raman’s wealthy brother Gautam (Abhishek Banerjee) is already in a bad mood when he arrives at the station to pick him up. Finding Raman being grilled by the police as to where he found the hat only makes Gautam grouchier.

At first, the cops don’t seem eager to investigate a lead beaten out of a nearby tea vendor, so Jhumpa asks the brothers for help finding her baby. Gautam offers her money. The money isn’t for anything in particular, like hiring a detective or paying for a ride to a friend’s house. It’s just supposed to make Jhumpa go away. She doesn’t take the money.

That brief exchange summarizes the point of the film. People of means think that every problem can be solved with money. They aren’t concerned with what happens after they hand over their cash, so long as they get what they want. In this case, Gautam wants to take Raman to their mother’s house. He doesn’t really care if Jhumpa finds her baby or not.

Raman is disgusted by his brother’s lack of sympathy, but the cops take the decision out of the men’s hands. Inspector Shakti Singh (Sahidur Rahaman) and constable Pandit Ji (Harish Khanna) order the guys and Jhumpa to follow them in Gautam’s car to investigate the tea seller’s lead in a remote area that’s further away than the “15 minutes” they promised.

Along the way, the car is stopped by other law enforcement officers who’ve gotten a tip via social media that two men and a woman in a black SUV fled a train station with a stolen baby. They’ve even got Gautam’s license plate number. Singh and Pandit Ji set these officers straight, but that won’t stop the firestorm the rumor set off in the region. Turns out Champa isn’t the first baby to be taken, and folks are eager to make someone pay. Jhumpa and the brothers are only safe as long as they stay with the police — a fact they don’t appreciate until it’s too late.

From the brothers’ perspective, Stolen is about being in the wrong place at the wrong time and how your response to trouble illuminates your character. But from a wider view, the story is about powerlessness. It’s about how easy it is to victimize the poor and working class, and how institutions like the police that purportedly exist to help everyone don’t really (last year’s thriller Sector 36 was another great example of this).

That kind of environment creates a vacuum where poor people’s only recourses for justice are the ones they create for themselves. Hence the appeal of an anonymous social media rumor that pins the blame squarely on three people. Targeting Jhumpa, Raman, and Gautam is an action the villagers can take in the absence of better options. Rich guys like Gautam don’t have enough cash to defuse that explosive anger borne from helplessness.

The performances in Stolen are pitch-perfect. Banerjee plays Gautam as loathsome at the start, but his mind and heart open as their situation worsens. Vardhan has some of the saddest eyes in the business, making it easy to care for Raman, who’s always trying to do the right thing. Maelzer’s Jhumpa keeps secrets, but her desperation is genuine and urgent.

Director Karan Tejpal — who co-wrote Stolen with Gaurav Dhingra and Swapnil Salkar — is equally adept at showing the breadth of a societal problem as he is at showing the emotional turmoil of the three main characters. He also displays a real flair for action. The stunt driving in Stolen is a marvel. This film is something special.

Streaming Video News: June 5, 2025

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with today’s streaming premiere of the Hindi romantic comedy Bhool Chuk Maaf, just two weeks after it debuted in theaters. Two days ago, Prime premiered the Hindi kidnapping drama Stolen. I think it’s terrific.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Hulu with the new Telugu series Devika & Danny. The other day, I finished my audit of the Hulu page. If you’ve noticed a bunch of titles removed, that’s why.

Finally, I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with the streaming debut of Sunny Deol’s action flick Jaat. I also updated the list with a massive collection of Hindi films from Viacom 18 studios that are set to expire from Netflix on July 1. They’ve expired and returned before, but there’s no guarantee that they’ll be back on Netflix any time soon (or at all). Streaming Video News: May 29, 2025

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with today’s addition of the Tamil action film Retro. Yesterday, the streamer added the Telugu sequel HIT: The Third Case to the catalog, and Salman Khan’s Sikandar became available over the weekend. Netflix also renewed three Hindi series for additional seasons: The Royals, Black Warrant, and Mismatched, for its fourth and final season.

A bunch of Telugu movies and the Hindi film Axone are set to expire from Netflix in June:

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Hulu with the debut of the new Hindi series Criminal Justice: A Family Matter (also available in Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu). Disney — the company that owns Hulu — announced new perks programs for Disney+ and Hulu subscribers, with further details on the Hulu program coming June 2.

There are no new Indian movies on Amazon Prime this week, but I am excited to watch the kidnapping thriller Stolen when it premieres June 4 (the afternoon of June 3 in the US):

Kites Swipes Song from Lord of the Rings

I liked Kites a lot. But, a day later, I’m still so disappointed in one aspect of the film, it merits its own post.

A haunting, ethereal musical theme pervades much of the movie. The song is beautiful, and it augments the movie’s most emotional sequences. You can listen to a snippet of it here:

There’s only one problem. Kites composer Rajesh Roshan didn’t write it.

I don’t mean Roshan may have accidentally used a melody that he’d heard somewhere before. I mean he took an entire song, pretty much note for note, from another movie’s soundtrack.

As I wrote in my review of the film, “[t]he song is identical in melody, key, and instrumentation to ‘Aniron (Theme for Aragorn and Arwen),’ written by Enya for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.” However, Enya is not properly attributed as the composer anywhere in the film’s credits (source: IMDb).

Maybe there’s not a lot of overlap between fans of Hindi films and fantasy geeks like me, and Roshan figured he wouldn’t get caught. Fellowship didn’t even make a million dollars during its run in India (source: Box Office Mojo). Or perhaps Roshan was just being brazen, and he didn’t care if anyone found out.

In either case, he can’t claim sole credit for Kites‘ music.

Update: I’ve heard that it may not be Roshan who’s responsible for appropriating Enya’s song. It may be Salim-Sulaiman, a pair of brothers who composed some of the background music for Kites.
