Streaming Video News: July 27, 2020

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with dozens of Indian and Pakistani titles added over the weekend, including a bunch of Hindi films from Reliance Entertainment (many of which used to be on Netflix). Here’s a list of all of the Reliance titles added this month, including five I mentioned last week:

In other streaming video news, Hotstar released the trailer for Vidyu Jammwal’s Khuda Haafiz, which debuts on the service on August 14. Too bad it doesn’t have English subtitles:

Sushant Singh Rajput’s final movie Dil Bechara just released on Hotstar/Disney+Hotstar across the globe. For the time being, Dil Bechara is streaming for free even if you’re not a Hotstar subscriber. Here’s where to watch it in the United States:

The romance Dil Bechara is a based on John Green’s novel The Fault in Our Stars, about a pair of young people who’ve endured serious illnesses who undertake a search for a reclusive author. Sanjana Sanghi makes her film debut opposite Sushant, with Saif Ali Khan playing the author.

In other streaming video news, I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with two newly added Hindi films:  2016’s Project Marathwada and 2020’s Door Ke Darshan (which released theatrically in February as “Doordarshan” before a lawsuit forced it to change its title).

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with dozens of Indian films added in the last week, including yesterday’s new release, the Kannada film French Biryani. A handful of popular Hindi titles also turned up on Prime recently, including:

Streaming Video News: May 2, 2016

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with four new additions to the catalog. Well, four re-additions, actually. After a prolonged absence from the service, Besharam, Bodyguard, I, Me, aur Main, and Singham are back. Their return (sort of) offsets the recent expiration of Kill Dil, Shahid, and Shuddh Desi Romance.

Box Office: January 31-February 2, 2014

Following a less-than-stellar opening weekend performance in American theaters, Jai Ho‘s earnings cratered in its second weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, Jai Ho‘s earnings fell nearly eighty percent in its second weekend, earning just $176,214 in the U.S. and Canada.

For comparison’s sake, theaters that carried 11-week-old films like Philomena or The Hunger Games: Catching Fire earned more per screen ($1,702 and $1,144 respectively) than did theaters that gave Jai Ho a second week ($904).

Jai Ho‘s total U.S./Canada earnings of $1,187,266 so far put it well off the pace of recent Salman Khan films like Dabangg 2 ($2,519,190), Ek Tha Tiger ($2,347,774), and Bodyguard ($1,834,384).

In Theaters February 3, 2012

Chicago area theaters are taking a break from programming any new Hindi films in anticipation of next weekend’s big release, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu. As a result, the only Bollywood movies in theaters the weekend beginning Friday, February 3, is Agneepath.

Agneepath — which earned $1,213,096 in its first weekend in U.S. theaters — carries over at the Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5 in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville.

Other Indian movies showing at the Golf Glen 5 this weekend include Bodyguard (Telugu), Business Man (Telugu) and Casanovva (Malayalam).

Opening January 26: Agneepath

Bucking tradition, Agneepath (“Path of Fire”) storms into Chicago area theaters on Thursday, January 26, 2012. The Bollywood revenge thriller stars Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra opposite Sanjay Dutt as a villainous (and eyebrow-less) drug lord.

Agneepath opens on Thursday at the Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5 in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. Given that most other new movies open on Friday, expect showtimes for Agneepath to change from Thursday to Friday. The film has a runtime of 2 hrs. 48 min.

Other Indian movies showing at the Golf Glen 5 as of Friday, January 27, include Bodyguard (Telugu), Business Man (Telugu) and Nanban (Tamil).

In Theaters January 20, 2012

For a second weekend, there are no new Hindi films opening in Chicago area theaters. That should change next week with the release of Agneepath, which stars Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra and Sanjay Dutt.

The AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington is carrying over Players and the 2D-version of Don 2,which has earned $3,651,705 during four weeks in U.S. theaters.

This weekend, the Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5 in Niles is showing Arabeem Ottakom P. Madhavan Nayarum in Oru Marubhoomikkadha (Malayalam), Bodyguard (Telugu), Nanban (Tamil), Vettai (Tamil) and Business Man (Telugu), which also carries over at the Cinemark at Seven Bridges in Woodridge.

In Theaters January 13, 2012

As independent films make their way into theaters in advance of Oscar season, there’s little screenspace available for Bollywood movies without all-star casts. Accordingly, there are no new Hindi movies opening in the Chicago area the weekend beginning Friday, January 13, 2012.

The Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5 in Niles and AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington are both carrying over recent releases Players and Don 2, though only the South Barrington 30 has Don 2 in 3D.

Both of the above theaters will also feature the Tamil film Vettai as of Friday. Other Indian movies showing at the Golf Glen 5 this weekend include Bodyguard (Telugu), Business Man (Telugu) and Nanban (Tamil). Business Man is also showing at the Cinemark at Seven Bridges in Woodridge.

Opening September 29: Force and Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster

Two new Hindi movies open in the Chicago area the weekend beginning Friday, September 29, 2011. The wider release of the two is the cop drama Force, starring John Abraham and Genelia D’Souza.

Force opens on Friday at the Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5 in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. Click here for a complete list of U.S. theaters showing the movie, which has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 17 min.

Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster is the other new Hindi film opening in the Chicago area this weekend, making its debut at the Golf Glen 5.

Last weekend’s new release, Mausam, carries over at all three of the above theaters. The South Barrington 30 also continues to devote screenspace to Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Bodyguard.

Other Indian movies showing at the Golf Glen 5 this weekend include Dookudu (Telugu), Muran (Tamil) and Pranayam (Malayalam).
