Streaming Video News: September 16, 2020

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with an October 2 release date for the Netflix Original movie Serious Men, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

I also updated my Upcoming Bollywood Release Dates page (where I keep track of Hotstar news) with a newly announced November 9 release date for Akshay Kumar’s Laxxmi Bomb. The announcement follows a Bollywood Hungama report yesterday that Hotstar planned to hold the release of its three remaining “Multiplex” titles — Laxxmi Bomb, Bhuj, and The Big Bull — until after the conclusion of the Indian Premier League cricket season in early November. While it’s common practice for major movies to avoid releasing theatrically during cricket tournaments, I suspect the fact that all three movies are still finishing filming and post-production influenced the decision as well.

So what does that mean for streaming releases in the near term? Netflix seems content to debut one or two new films or series per month. Amazon Prime quietly launched a few new Indian series in recent weeks but hasn’t made any major movie announcements. I suspect Laxxmi Bomb‘s release date indicates that things will be relatively quiet until around Diwali in mid-November. Last month, Bollywood Hungama scooped a potential Diwali release for Varun Dhawan’s Coolie No. 1 on Amazon Prime, so we’ll see if that comes true.

On a related note, even if theaters in India reopen next month, don’t expect any major flicks to be first out of the gate (especially after the tepid response to Tenet). Kiara Advani-starrer Indoo Ki Jawani purportedly wants to be first in theaters.

Finally, I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with a bunch of older Hindi titles added in the last two days. Check ’em out:

Streaming Video News: September 4, 2020

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with today’s addition of the brand new Telugu movie V (available in Kannada, Malayalam, and Tamil as well). The new Malayalam film C U Soon was added earlier this week. A Spanish-dubbed version of the Rajkummar Rao-Nargis Fakhri movie 5 Weddings is also now available on Prime.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with the addition of the South African Desi comedy sequel Kandasamys: The Wedding. Netflix just released the trailer for Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare, which will be available for streaming on September 18:

Akshay Kumar’s Laxmmi Bomb was rumored to debut on Hotstar on September 9, but it’s undergoing re-shoots, so no release is imminent. Instead, Hotstar will launch a second season of its original series Hostages on September 9.

In other news, Yash Raj Films plans to launch its own streaming service. This could potentially lead to YRF titles being removed from Amazon Prime, which currently holds the streaming rights to the studio’s catalog. The news report is light on details, so we’ll have to wait and see how YRF justifies asking consumers to subscribe to yet another streaming service.

Happy Labor Day weekend!

Streaming Video News: August 28, 2020

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with today’s debut of the semi-autobiographical Original series Masaba Masaba, starring Masaba Gupta and her mother, Neena. A new season of the docuseries The Creative Indians was also added this week, featuring episodes about actors Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Radhika Apte, and Boman Irani; directors Dibakar Banerjee and Imtiaz Ali; and movie location scout Nataranjan Ramji. The 2020 Malayalam film Maniyarayile Ashokan debuts August 30.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with dozens of Indian films added in the last week, including the 2020 Hindi horror flick Cookie. The streaming service announced an October 23 premiere date for Season 2 of the Amazon Original crime series Mirzapur.

The romantic drama Sadak 2 — starring Sanjay Dutt, Alia Bhatt, and Aditya Roy Kapur — made its worldwide debut on Hotstar today.

Streaming Video News: August 14, 2020

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with the addition of Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, a new biopic starring Janhvi Kapoor as the first woman to fly in combat for the Indian Air Force. An uplifting film to catch while you can is 2015’s Dhanak, which expires from Netflix on August 20. Two siblings trek across Rajasthan on foot hoping to find Shah Rukh Khan, who they believe can cure the little boy’s blindness. It’s really, really good.

Netflix also released the trailer for the new Original series Masaba Masaba, a fictionalized version of the life of fashion designer Masaba Gupta (daughter of actress Neena Gupta). Both Gupta women star in the series, and the trailer highlights a few celebrity guest cameos.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with dozens of Indian films added in the last week, including a bunch of Hindi titles from Reliance Entertainment and Shemaroo Entertainment. Here are the ones I’ve reviewed:

If you watch any of these movies, make it Love Story 2050. The vision for the future laid out in this sci-fi flick Priyanka Chopra wishes we’d all forget is hilarious in the worst possible ways. I’d have to re-watch it to be sure, but it might qualify as “so bad, it’s good.”

Vidyut Jammwal’s new action flick Khuda Haafiz debuted on Hotstar today. The streamer also unveiled the trailer for Sanjay Dutt’s Sadak 2, which premieres on August 28.

Streaming Video News: August 6, 2020

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with 30 new Indian titles added in the last week, including the new Amazon Original Hindi series Bandish Bandits (also in 4K UHD). The music-themed show features a soundtrack by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, who were among the participants in a concert of songs from the series that streamed live on YouTube. Watch it here:

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with an August 21 premiere date for the Netflix Original Hindi film Class of ’83, starring Bobby Deol. The trailer launches later tonight.

Kasey Moore of What’s on Netflix analyzed all of Netflix’s content across all languages and found that 10% of the movies and series on Netflix are in Hindi (552 titles total). That’s the second highest percentage after English (55%, or 3,186 titles). And in case you missed it, head to What’s on Netflix to check out my roundup of all the new Indian content added to Netflix in July.

Hotstar announced an August 28 release date for Sadak 2, starring Pooja Bhatt, Sanjay Dutt, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Alia Bhatt.

Streaming Video News: July 30, 2020

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with dozens of Indian films that have been added in the last few days, including today’s worldwide debut of the biopic Shakuntala Devi (also in 4K UHD), starring Vidya Balan. Other recently added 2020 releases include the Punjabi film Jaan To Pyara and the Malayalam movie Velikku Veluppankalam.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with yesterday’s release of the 2020 Telugu film Uma Maheswara Ugra Roopasya. The Netflix Original crime drama Raat Akeli Hai — starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte — debuts tomorrow.

Most of the movies in this list I posted earlier this week have been renewed and are not expiring from Netflix as planned. However, there are still seven Indian titles expiring from Netflix on August 1, with Chennai Express (which has good dance numbers) following on August 7. Scroll down to the “Expiring Soon” section of my Netflix page to see what’s on the way out.

Also releasing globally tomorrow on Hotstar is the Hindi comedy Lootcase, starring Kunal Khemu. You’ll need a subscription to watch it, but Dil Bechara is still available for free if you haven’t caught it yet.

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with dozens of Indian and Pakistani titles added over the weekend, including a bunch of Hindi films from Reliance Entertainment (many of which used to be on Netflix). Here’s a list of all of the Reliance titles added this month, including five I mentioned last week:

In other streaming video news, Hotstar released the trailer for Vidyu Jammwal’s Khuda Haafiz, which debuts on the service on August 14. Too bad it doesn’t have English subtitles:

Dil Bechara is Streaming for Free on Hotstar

Sushant Singh Rajput’s final movie Dil Bechara just released on Hotstar/Disney+Hotstar across the globe. For the time being, Dil Bechara is streaming for free even if you’re not a Hotstar subscriber. Here’s where to watch it in the United States:
https://www.hotstar.com/us/movies/dil-bechara/1260036017

The romance Dil Bechara is a based on John Green’s novel The Fault in Our Stars, about a pair of young people who’ve endured serious illnesses who undertake a search for a reclusive author. Sanjana Sanghi makes her film debut opposite Sushant, with Saif Ali Khan playing the author.

In other streaming video news, I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with two newly added Hindi films:  2016’s Project Marathwada and 2020’s Door Ke Darshan (which released theatrically in February as “Doordarshan” before a lawsuit forced it to change its title).

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with dozens of Indian films added in the last week, including yesterday’s new release, the Kannada film French Biryani. A handful of popular Hindi titles also turned up on Prime recently, including:

Streaming Video News: April 30, 2020

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with today’s additions of Amitabh Bachchan’s 2020 Marathi film AB Aani CD and Taapsee Pannu’s Hindi drama Thappad (also available in 4K UHD).

Thappad is the last major Hindi theatrical release of 2020 scheduled to join Amazon Prime for the foreseeable future. There’s a chance some smaller releases from this year may make their way to Prime, and some already completed pictures may skip theaters altogether and release straight to streaming. Of course Amazon has a bunch of its own Indian Originals in the works as well. But until theaters reopen and studios start releasing new movies into cinemas — which may depend not just on conditions in India but across the globe — we’re facing a bit of a new-content drought on Prime.

Another of the last remaining Hindi theatrical releases of 2020 — Baaghi 3 — is now streaming on Hotstar. The original Baaghi was bad in a fun way, but Baaghi 3 is just bad.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with the addition of the 2019 Tamil film R.K.Nagar. I also added May 7 expiration dates for Andaz Apna Apna, Jalpari: The Desert Mermaid, and Action Replayy (which is not good).

Streaming Video News: November 1, 2019

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with the worldwide premiere of the Hindi heist film Drive, starring Jacqueline Fernandez and Sushant Singh Rajput. Producer Karan Johar wasn’t confident enough to release this trash fire (my review’s in progress) into theaters, so he sent it to Netflix as part of his content creation deal with the streaming service. The 2019 Tamil film Mehandi Circus was also added to Netflix recently, even though it’s been available on Amazon Prime since May (disclaimer: all my Amazon links contain an affiliate code that may earn me a commission on purchases made via the links).

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with dozens of movies added in the last few days, including the following 2019 releases:

In other Amazon news, it looks like the Malayalam film Jallikattu joins Prime on November 3, even though it just released in North American theaters yesterday.

If you just can’t get enough Sushant Singh Rajput this weekend, Chhichhore is now available on Hotstar.
