Opening July 7: Mom and Guest Iin London

Two new Hindi films hit Chicago area theaters on July 7, 2017. Sridevi plays the title character in the thriller Mom, which gets the wider release of the two movies.

Mom opens Friday at AMC River East 21 in Chicago, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington, Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 20 min.

This weekend’s other new release is the comedy Guest Iin London, the followup to 2010’s Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge?. Paresh Rawal returns as the problematic guest, but Ajay Devgn and Konkona Sen Sharma aren’t back for the sequel, sadly. Guest Iin London opens Friday at the South Barrington 24 and has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 13 min.

Following a stellar holiday weekend, The Big Sick expands across the Chicago area on Friday. Tubelight carries over at MovieMax and the South Barrington 24.

After a slow start at the US box office (especially for a Salman Khan movie), Tubelight gets a second week at the following Chicagoland theaters as of Friday, June 30, 2017: AMC River East 21 in Chicago, Regal Round Lake Beach Stadium 18 in Round Lake Beach, AMC Showplace Niles 12 in Niles, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington, Marcus Addison Cinema in Addison, Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge.

While no new Hindi films open locally this weekend, Bollywood fans will want to check out Anupam Kher and Shenaz Treasurywala in The Big Sick, a wonderful romantic comedy starring Kumail Nanjiani about his real-life love story with his wife, Emily Gordon (who co-wrote the film with him). Following its debut in New York and Los Angeles last weekend, The Big Sick opens in select Chicago area theaters on Friday, before expanding regionally and nationwide next weekend. Opening June 23: Tubelight

Salman Khan’s annual Eid release hits theaters on June 23, 2017. Tubelight is an official remake of the 2015 faith-based film Little Boy, with Salman essaying a role played by an 8-year-old in the original. Chinese actress Zhu Zhu costars in the movie.

With Tubelight looming over next weekend’s horizon, no new Hindi movies open in Chicago area theaters the weekend beginning Friday, June 16, 2017. There aren’t many Bollywood flicks sticking around, either.

After tanking hard in its debut weekend, Raabta only carries over at the AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington. MovieMax Cinemas in Niles holds over Hindi Medium, Sachin: A Billion Dreams, and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion in Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil. That’s it.

Opening June 9: Raabta

One new Hindi movie opens in the Chicago area on June 9, 2017. The reincarnation drama Raabta (“Connection“) stars Sushant Singh Rajput, Kriti Sanon, and Jim Sarbh.

Raabta opens Friday at the AMC River East 21 in Chicago, AMC Showplace Niles 12 in Niles, AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge. I’m surprised that this isn’t opening in more theaters, specifically at MovieMax and the Cantera 17, which carry almost every new Bollywood film. It’s weird. The movie has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 28 min.

Also noteworthy: The family movie The Wishing Tree — which opens in India this Friday — is already available on Netflix in the United States.

Hindi Medium and Sachin: A Billion Dreams both carry over at the South Barrington 24, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, and the Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion gets a seventh week at MovieMax (Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi), South Barrington 24 (Hindi), Cantera 17 (Hindi), and Cinemark at Seven Bridges in Woodridge (Telugu).

Opening June 2: Dobaara — See Your Evil

One new Bollywood movie hits Chicago area theaters — correction, theater — on June 2, 2017. Dobaara: See Your Evil is the official Hindi remake of Oculus. It stars real-life siblings Huma Qureshi and Saqib Saleem.

Dobaara: See Your Evil opens Friday at the AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington. It has a listed runtime of 1 hr. 46 min.

Sachin: A Billion Dreams gets a second week at the South Barrington 24, as well as the AMC River East 21 in Chicago, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville.

Both MovieMax and the South Barrington 24 give a third week to Half Girlfriend and Hindi Medium, which also carries over at the Cantera 17.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion gets a sixth week at MovieMax (Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi), South Barrington 24 (Hindi), Cantera 17 (Hindi), and Cinemark at Seven Bridges in Woodridge (Telugu).

Bollywood fans may also be interested in checking out 3 Idiotas — the Spanish-language remake (with English subtitles) of 3 Idiots — opening on Friday across the Chicago area.

One new Hindi film opens in the Chicago area on May 26, 2017. The documentary/biographical drama Sachin: A Billion Dreams — about cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar — is the latest sports film from director James Erskine and features a soundtrack by A.R. Rahman.

Sachin: A Billion Dreams opens Friday at the AMC River East 21 in Chicago, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 20 min.

Half Girlfriend gets a second week at all of the above theaters, plus the AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge, while Hindi Medium carries over at MovieMax, South Barrington 24, and Cantera 17.

The number of local theaters carrying Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is dwindling. Ticket prices have finally dropped, so take advantage of those matinée specials to see it a second time (or a fourth time, if you’re my friend Melanie!). Here’s where you can still see Mahishmati in all its glory:

Two more Hindi movies hit Chicago area theaters on May 19, 2017. Things are getting crowded! The wider of the two new releases is Half Girlfriend — based on the Chetan Bhagat novel of the same name — starring Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. The trailer looks abysmal.

The more promising new release is the family comedy Hindi Medium, starring Irrfan Khan.

As Baahubali 2‘s wake subsides — relatively speaking, since it’s still expected to finish in the overall US Top 10 this weekend — two new Bollywood movies try their luck in Chicago area theaters on May 12, 2017. Yash Raj Films’ latest romantic-comedy Meri Pyaari Bindu stars Parineeti Chopra and Ayushmann Khurrana.

Meri Pyaari Bindu opens Friday at the AMC River East 21 in Chicago, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington, Marcus Addison Cinema in Addison, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge. It has a listed runtime of 2 hours.

Also new this weekend is the third film in director Ram Gopal Varma’s gangster series, Sarkar 3, starring Amitabh Bachchan.

Sarkar 3 opens Friday at the River East 21, MovieMax, South Barrington 30, Woodridge 18, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 10 min.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is going strong locally, carrying over in thirteen Chicago area theaters for a third straight week. Ticket prices for all languages still cost about $15.

Bollywood Box Office: May 5-7, 2017

Having passed Dangal as the top-earning Indian film in North America of all time before the end of its first week of release, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion padded its lead during its second weekend in theaters. From May 5-7, 2017, the fantasy epic earned another $3,390,132 from 430 theaters ($7,884 average; adjusted average of $8,110 from 418 theaters*), finishing in seventh place overall for the weekend. Its combined total from all languages is $16,350,570. Baahubali 2‘s second weekend total is about a third of what it earned during its opening weekend, which is good even by normal standards but especially when considering that its ticket prices dropped at the start of its second week of release (not to mention there were no more pricey IMAX showings over the weekend).
