Opening September 1: Baadshaho and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan

Two new Hindi movies open in Chicago area theaters on September 1, 2017. The ensemble thriller Baadshaho — starring Ajay Devgn, Ileana D’Cruz, Esha Gupta, Emraan Hashmi, Sanjay Mishra, and Vidyut Jammwal — gets the wider release of the two films.

Baadshaho opens Friday at the AMC River East 21 in Chicago, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington, Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 42 min.

Also new is the erectile dysfunction-themed romantic comedy Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, starring the Dum Laga Ke Haisha duo Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar.

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan opens Friday at MovieMax, South Barrington 24, and Cantera 17. It has a listed runtime of 1 hr. 59 min.

Despite a rocky start in North America, the fun action comedy A Gentleman carries over at the River East 21, MovieMax, South Barrington 24, Cantera 17, Woodridge 18, Regal Round Lake Beach Stadium 18 in Round Lake Beach, and Marcus Addison Cinema in Addison.

Bareilly Ki Barfi and Toilet: Ek Prem Katha both carry over at MovieMax, South Barrington 24, and Cantera 17.

Opening August 25: A Gentleman

The new Hindi action comedy A Gentleman opens in Chicago area theaters on August 25, 2017. Originally envisioned as part of a franchise based on Bang Bang!, A Gentleman is a officially stand-alone film starring Sidharth Malhotra and Jacqueline Fernandez.

A Gentleman opens Friday at the AMC River East 21 in Chicago, Regal Round Lake Beach Stadium 18 in Round Lake Beach, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington, Century Stratford Square in Bloomingdale, Marcus Addison Cinema in Addison, Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 25 min.

After a great opening weekend in a handful of North American theaters, Bareilly Ki Barfi gets a second week at MovieMax, South Barrington 24, and Cantera 17. All three theaters hold over Toilet: Ek Prem Katha as well, which also carries over at the River East 21. Jab Harry Met Sejal sticks around for a fourth week at the South Barrington 24.

After a slow start at the US box office (especially for a Salman Khan movie), Tubelight gets a second week at the following Chicagoland theaters as of Friday, June 30, 2017: AMC River East 21 in Chicago, Regal Round Lake Beach Stadium 18 in Round Lake Beach, AMC Showplace Niles 12 in Niles, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington, Marcus Addison Cinema in Addison, Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge.

While no new Hindi films open locally this weekend, Bollywood fans will want to check out Anupam Kher and Shenaz Treasurywala in The Big Sick, a wonderful romantic comedy starring Kumail Nanjiani about his real-life love story with his wife, Emily Gordon (who co-wrote the film with him). Following its debut in New York and Los Angeles last weekend, The Big Sick opens in select Chicago area theaters on Friday, before expanding regionally and nationwide next weekend. The Pakistani movie Yalghaar (Urdu w/English subtitles) opens Friday at the Niles 12, South Barrington 24, and Cantera 17.

Opening June 23: Tubelight

Salman Khan’s annual Eid release hits theaters on June 23, 2017. Tubelight is an official remake of the 2015 faith-based film Little Boy, with Salman essaying a role played by an 8-year-old in the original. Chinese actress Zhu Zhu costars in the movie.

After a very good opening weekend for Raees and a not so good opening weekend for Kaabil, both films stick around Chicago area theaters for a second week. Starting Friday, February 3, 2017, both movies carry over at the AMC River East 21 in Chicago, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, Regal Round Lake Beach Stadium 18 in Round Lake Beach, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge.

Additionally, Raees gets a second weekend at Muvico Rosemont 18 in Rosemont, while Kaabil carries over at  Marcus Addison Cinema in Addison and Century Stratford Square in Bloomingdale. Dangal gets a seventh weekend at the South Barrington 30.

Growing Up Smith — a cute story about an Indian-American boy’s childhood in Oklahoma in 1979 — opens on Friday at the South Barrington 30. Stars Roni Akurati and Anjul Nigam will be at the South Barrington 30 for two special screenings of the film on Monday, February 6, at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. The specific theater for the screenings only holds 36 people (including two spaces for wheelchairs), so buy your tickets in advance.

In Theaters: November 4, 2016

Even with three big Hollywood films releasing on November 4, 2016 — Doctor Strange, Trolls, and Hacksaw RidgeAe Dil Hai Mushkil carries over in all eleven of the Chicago theaters in which it opened last weekend.

Last weekend’s other new release — Shivaay — didn’t fare as well as ADHM at the box office, thus it carries over in just three of its original five theaters: MovieMax, South Barrington 30, and Cantera 17.

Opening October 28: Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Shivaay

The Diwali releases are here to save what has been a lackluster October at the North American box office. Director Karan Johar’s romance, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (“This Heart is Complicated“) — starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Fawad Khan — gets the wider release of the two new Bollywood films opening in the Chicago area on October 28, 2016.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil — which has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 38 min. — opens on Friday in eleven local theaters (two more theaters than Fan or Sultan):

The weekend’s other new release is the action adventure Shivaay, starring and directed by Ajay Devgn.

Shivaay opens on Friday at the Chicago Showplace Icon, River East 21, MovieMax, South Barrington 30, and Cantera 17. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 49 min.

The only older Hindi films carrying over are 31st October at MovieMax and M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story at the South Barrington 30.
