Opening August 10: Vishwaroop II

Kamal Haasan’s multilingual action film Vishwaroop 2 hits Chicago area theaters on August 10, 2018. Shot simultaneously in Hindi and Tamil (as Vishwaroopam 2), the film’s Telugu-dubbed version releases locally as well.

Vishwaroop 2 (Hindi) opens on Friday at MovieMax Cinemas in Niles and the AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington, with preview shows starting Thursday night. Vishwaroopam 2 (Tamil and Telugu-dubbed) opens Thursday night at MovieMax, South Barrington 24, Marcus Addison Cinema in Addison, Century Stratford Square in Bloomingdale, and Cinemark at Seven Bridges in Woodridge. All versions have English subtitles and listed runtimes of 2 hrs. 25 min.

Fanney Khan gets a second week at MovieMax, South Barrington 24, and the Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. Karwaan and Mulk also carry over at the South Barrington 24 and MovieMax, which holds on to Dhadak and Sanju as well.

Opening August 3: Fanney Khan, Karwaan, Mulk, and Puzzle

It’s a busy weekend for Chicago are Bollywood fans with three new Hindi films opening locally. The movie getting the widest release on August 3, 2018, is Fanney Khan, starring Anil Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Fanney Khan opens Friday at the AMC River East 21 in Chicago, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 9 min.

Also new this week is the road trip flick Karwaan, featuring Irrfan Khan and Malayalam-film star Dulquer Salmaan in his Bollywood debut. Karwaan opens Friday at the River East 21, MovieMax, and South Barrington 24. It has a listed runtime of 1 hr. 54 min.

Last among the new releases is the courtroom drama Mulk, starring Taapsee Pannu and Rishi Kapoor. Mulk opens Friday at MovieMax and the South Barrington 24. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 20 min.

Sanju carries over for a sixth week at MovieMax, South Barrington 24, and the AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodrige. Dhadak gets a third week at the South Barrington 24 and MovieMax, which also holds over Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster 3.

Karwaan isn’t Irrfan Khan’s only new local release this weekend. He co-stars in the English-language film Puzzle, a drama about a New England housewife whose life changes after receiving a puzzle as a gift. It debuts Friday at the River East 21, Century Centre Cinema in Chicago, and Century 12 Evanston in Evanston before it opens region-wide on August 24. I haven’t stopped thinking about Puzzle since I watched it.

Opening June 1: Veere Di Wedding and Bhavesh Joshi Superhero

The Kapoor siblings face off in Chicago area theaters on June 1, 2018. Big sister Sonam’s movie gets the wider release of the two with her buddy comedy Veere Di Wedding, co-starring Kareen Kapoor Khan, Swara Bhaskar, and Shikha Talsania.

Veere Di Wedding opens on Friday at the AMC River East 21 in Chicago, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington, Marcus Addison Cinema in Addison, Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 2 min.

Little brother Harshvardhan’s sophomore film Bhavesh Joshi Superhero also opens locally on Friday at MovieMax, South Barrington 24, and Cantera 17. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 34 min.

Last weekend’s new release Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran carries over at MovieMax, South Barrington 24, and Cantera 17. All three theaters also hold over Raazi for a fourth week, as do the River East 21 and Woodridge 18. 102 Not Out gets a fifth week at MovieMax and the South Barrington 24.

Opening April 20: Beyond the Clouds

The touching family drama Beyond the Clouds hits Chicago area theaters on April 20, 2018.

Beyond the Clouds opens Friday at MovieMax Cinemas in Niles and AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington. It has a runtime of 2 hours.

October gets a second week at both of the above theaters, plus the AMC River East 21 in Chicago, AMC Rosemont 18 in Rosemont, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville.

Baaghi 2 and Hichki carry over at MovieMax and the South Barrington 24, which also holds over Blackmail.

Opening April 13: October and Mercury

Two new Bollywood films hit Chicago area theaters on April 13, 2018. First up is the romantic drama October, starring Varun Dhawan.

October opens Friday at the AMC River East 21 in Chicago, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC Rosemont 18 in Rosemont, AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington, Marcus Addison Cinema in Addison, Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville, AMC Showplace Naperville 16 in Naperville, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge. It has a listed runtime of 1 hr. 45 min.

Also new this week is Mercury, which has no dialogue at all. Prabhu Deva stars in this silent thriller.

Preview shows of Mercury start Thursday night at MovieMax, Century Stratford Square in Bloomingdale, and Cinemark at Seven Bridges in Woodridge. It has a listed runtime of 1 hr. 48 min.

Opening March 23: Hichki

The great Rani Mukerji is back with the drama Hichki (“Hiccup“), in which she plays a teacher with Tourette Syndrome. Rani recently did a video interview with Brad Cohen, whose own experience as a teacher with Tourette’s — chronicled in his book, Front of the Class — inspired the movie. It’s worth checking out.

Hichki opens in the Chicago area on Friday, March 23, 2018, at MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. It has a listed runtime of just 1 hr. 46 min.

Raid gets a second week at all three of the above theaters. The South Barrington 24 carries over Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, while MovieMax hangs on to Pari and Padmaavat.

Ajay Devgn reunites with his Baadshaho costar Ileana D’Cruz for the crime drama Raid, which hits Chicago area theaters on March 16, 2018.

Raid opens on Friday at MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. Raid has a listed runtime of 2 hours.

All three of the above theaters hold over Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. Pari gets a third week at the South Barrington 24 and MovieMax, which also carries over Pad Man and Padmaavat.

Although trailers for 3 Storeys and Dil Juunglee ran before Welcome to New York locally, neither movie is releasing in Chicagoland. Here are the Bollywood movies carrying over in Chicago theaters the weekend beginning Friday, March 9, 2018:

The horror flick Pari gets a second week at MovieMax Cinemas in Niles and the AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington. Both theaters and the Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville hang on to Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety and Padmaavat as well.

The South Barrington 24 gives Aiyaary a fourth weekend, and MovieMax carries over Welcome to New York and Pad Man.

Opening February 23: Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety and Welcome to New York

Two new Hindi films open in the Chicago area on February 23, 2018. First up is the romantic comedy Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, from the team behind the awful Pyaar Ka Punchnama movies.

Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety opens on Friday at MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 18 min.

The weekend’s other new release is the comedy Welcome to New York, starring Sonakshi Sinha and Diljit Dosanjh. The South Barrington 24 and Cantera 17 carry the movie in both 2D and 3D, while MovieMax has it in 2D only. Welcome to New York has a listed runtime of 1 hr. 58 min.

Aiyaary gets a second week at all three of the above theaters, plus the AMC Dine-In Rosemont 18 in Rosemont. Pad Man carries over at all four of those theaters, plus the Marcus Addison Cinema in Addison.
