Opening September 14: Manmarziyaan and Mitron

After its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Manmarziyaan — known internationally as “Husband Material” — hits Chicago area theaters on September 14, 2018. The romantic drama from director Anurag Kashyap stars Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal, and Abhishek Bachchan.

Manmarziyaan opens Friday at the AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. It has a runtime of 2 hrs. 36 min.

Also new this weekend is the Jackky Bhagnani comedy Mitron, which no one outside of the Bhagnani family is excited about. It opens Friday at the South Barrington 24 and MovieMax Cinemas in Niles.

Stree and Paltan carry over at MovieMax and the South Barrington 24, which also holds over Gold.

Opening August 24: Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi

The romantic comedy sequel Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi is the only new Bollywood film opening in the Chicago area on August 24, 2018. The 2016 original — Happy Bhag Jayegi — was just okay, but maybe the addition of Sonakshi Sinha to the cast can liven up the second film.

Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi opens Friday at the AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 16 min.

Gold carries over for a second week at the South Barrington 24, AMC River East 21 in Chicago, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, Marcus Addison Cinema in Addison, Century Stratford Square in Bloomingdale, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville.

Satyameva Jayate also gets a second week at MovieMax and the South Barrington 24.

Other Indian and Pakistani movies playing in Chicago area theaters this weekend:

In Theaters: March 9, 2018

Although trailers for 3 Storeys and Dil Juunglee ran before Welcome to New York locally, neither movie is releasing in Chicagoland. Here are the Bollywood movies carrying over in Chicago theaters the weekend beginning Friday, March 9, 2018:

The horror flick Pari gets a second week at MovieMax Cinemas in Niles and the AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington. Both theaters and the Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville hang on to Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety and Padmaavat as well.

The South Barrington 24 gives Aiyaary a fourth weekend, and MovieMax carries over Welcome to New York and Pad Man.

Other Indian movies showing in the Chicago area this weekend:

Opening March 2: Pari

Anushka Sharma’s latest home production — the horror movie Pari — hits Chicago area theaters on March 2, 2018.

Pari opens on Friday at MovieMax Cinemas in Niles and the AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 14 min.

Welcome to New York gets a second weekend at MovieMax, South Barrington 24, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. All three theaters also hold over Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, as does the AMC River East 21 in Chicago.

Pad Man carries over for a fourth week at MovieMax, Cantera 17, and AMC Dine-In Rosemont 18 in Rosemont. All three theaters hold on to Aiyaary for a third week, as does the South Barrington 24.

Padmaavat — which continues to perform well at the North American box office — sticks around for a sixth week at MovieMax, South Barrington 24, Cantera 17, AMC Showplace Niles 12 in Niles, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge.

Other Indian movies showing in the Chicago area this weekend:

Opening February 23: Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety and Welcome to New York

Two new Hindi films open in the Chicago area on February 23, 2018. First up is the romantic comedy Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, from the team behind the awful Pyaar Ka Punchnama movies.

Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety opens on Friday at MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 18 min.

The weekend’s other new release is the comedy Welcome to New York, starring Sonakshi Sinha and Diljit Dosanjh. The South Barrington 24 and Cantera 17 carry the movie in both 2D and 3D, while MovieMax has it in 2D only. Welcome to New York has a listed runtime of 1 hr. 58 min.

Aiyaary gets a second week at all three of the above theaters, plus the AMC Dine-In Rosemont 18 in Rosemont. Pad Man carries over at all four of those theaters, plus the Marcus Addison Cinema in Addison.

Padmaavat holds over for a fifth week in 2D at MovieMax, South Barrington 24, Cantera 17, Regal Round Lake Beach Stadium 18 in Round Lake Beach, AMC Showplace Niles 12 in Niles, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge.

In Theaters: December 15, 2017

Bollywood fans have few options in Chicago area theaters the weekend beginning Friday, December 15, 2017. Fukrey Returns gets a second week at MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville, and AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington, which also holds over Firangi and Tumhari Sulu.

If you just can’t wait for next weekend, the following local theaters are selling advanced tickets to Tiger Zinda Hai: MovieMax, South Barrington 24, AMC River East 21 in Chicago, AMC Dine-In Rosemont 18 in Rosemont, AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge, and AMC Loews Crestwood 18 in Crestwood.

Other Indian movies showing in the Chicago area this weekend:

Opening July 26: Bajatey Raho

The comedy Bajatey Raho is the only new Hindi movie opening in Chicago area theaters the weekend beginning July 26, 2013.

Bajatey Raho opens on Friday at the Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5 in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. It has a mercifully brief runtime of 1 hr. 50 min.

Given that local theaters have been running the trailer for Issaq, I’m a little surprised that the retelling of Romeo & Juliet isn’t opening in Chicago. Then again, my regular theater — the Cantera — is still showing the trailer for Gippi, which released in May, so perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised.

Only one of last weekend’s new releases sticks around for a second week. The slick thriller D-Day carries over for just one showing per day at both the South Barrington 30 and Cantera 17. Auf Wiedersehen, Ramaiya Vastavaiya.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag also carries over for another week at the South Barrington 30 and Cantera 17. The timing of its release was unfortunate since it seems to be getting crowded out of theaters by an abundance of newly-released Hollywood fare. It looks like the gripping biopic won’t even get as long a run in the Chicago area as Raanjhanaa, even though Bhaag Milkha Bhaag beat the romance’s opening weekend tally by over $200,000 in its opening weekend in the U.S.

Other Indian movies showing at the Golf Glen 5 this weekend include Alias Janaki (Telugu), Left Right Left (Malayalam), Saptapadii (Gujarati), and the Tamil films Maryan, Pattathu Yaani, and Sonna Puriyathu.

Opening July 19: Ramaiya Vastavaiya and D-Day

Two new Hindi films are set to open in Chicago area theaters on July 19, 2013. First up is the romantic comedy Ramaiya Vastavaiya, directed by Prabhu Deva.

Ramaiya Vastavaiya opens on Friday at the Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5 in Niles, AMC South Barrinton 30 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. All three theaters list different runtimes for the film, ranging from 2 hrs. 20 min. to 2 hrs. 30 min.

Also new in theaters this week is the thriller D-Day, starring Irrfan Khan, Arjun Rampal and Rishi Kapoor.

D-Day also opens on Friday at all of the above theaters. The runtimes listed for it range from 2 hrs. 15 min. to 2 hrs. 33 min.

After earning $647,112 in its opening weekend in U.S. theaters, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag carries over for a second week at all three of the above theaters, plus the AMC River East 21 in Chicago, Regal Gardens Stadium 1-6 in Skokie, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge. Many cinemas have reduced the number of daily showings of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag in order to accommodate this week’s four new Hollywood releases, so check the listings before you head to the theater.

If you just can’t get enough Irrfan Khan, Life of Pi gets a limited national re-release on Friday, showing locally at the South Barrington 30.

Other Indian movies playing at the Golf Glen 5 this weekend include Maryan (Tamil), Saptapadii (Gujarati), and the Telugu films Kevvu Keka and Sahasam.

Opening July 5: Policegiri

Sanjay Dutt’s Policegiri opens on Friday, July 5, 2013, at the Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5 in Niles.

Policegiri is the second new Hindi movie to open in Chicago area theaters this week, following Lootera‘s Wednesday opening at the AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. Lootera expands to the Golf Glen 5 on Friday.

After earning $143,616 in its opening week in U.S. theaters, Ghanchakkar carries over for a second week in limited showings at the South Barrington 30, Cantera 17, and Regal Gardens Stadium 1-6 in Skokie. With total earnings of $756,233 so far, Raanjhanaa gets a third week at the Golf Glen 5, Cantera 17, and South Barrington 30, which also gives a sixth week to Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani ($3,745,243 total in the U.S.).

Other Indian movies showing at the Golf Glen 5 this weekend include ABCD: American-Born Confused Desi (Malayalam), Balupu (Telugu), Mallela Theeram Lo Sirimalle Puvvu (Telugu), Saptapadii (Gujarati), and Singam 2 (Tamil), which is also showing at the Cinemark at Seven Bridges in Woodridge.

Opening August 31: Joker

Another new Hindi movie opens in Chicago area theaters the weekend beginning August 31, 2012. Joker stars Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha in a comedy about aliens, not that you’d be able to infer that from the title.

Joker opens on Friday at the Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5 in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. Joker‘s runtime is listed as 2 hrs. 30 min. at AMC’s website but is reported to be closer to 1 hrs. 40 min.

Last weekend’s new release, Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi, carries over for a second week at the South Barrington 30 and Cantera 17. Ek Tha Tiger, which has earned $2,347,774 in its first two weeks in U.S. theaters, gets a third week at all three of the above theaters.

Other Indian movies showing at the Golf Glen 5 this weekend include Kevi Rite Jaish (Gujarati), Mr. Marumakan (Malayalam), Mugamoodi (Tamil), Simhasanam (Malayalam), Srimannaraya (Telugu), and Sudigadu (Telugu).

The Chicago South Asian Film Festival announced the lineup of films for this year’s festival, which runs from September 20-23. The fest kicks off with a gala showing of Heroine and closes with the world premiere of Shobhna’s Seven Nights, starring Raveena Tandon, Lillete Dubey, and Anupam Kher.
