Streaming Video News: August 31, 2023

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with today’s additions of Vidya Balan’s murder mystery Neeyat and the Telugu film Ustaad (which is listed in Amazon’s catalog as “The Ustaad,” for some reason).

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Hulu with today’s premiere of the new Hindi series The Freelancer, which is also available in Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu.

I will update my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix tomorrow with the debut of the Netflix Original film Friday Night Plan, starring Juhi Chawla and Irrfan Khan’s son, Babil. This week, Netflix announced a December 7 release date for Zoya Akhtar’s hotly anticipated movie The Archies.

If you missed any of the new releases on Netflix in August, check my monthly roundup at What’s on Netflix.

Opening August 31: Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se

Update: When I published this on the afternoon of August 29, all the theaters had posted their full weekend schedules. Check again on Friday, and Stree is showing at the AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. It’s showing in 60 theaters across North America, and it has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 8 min.

One new Hindi film opens in Chicago area theaters on August 31, 2018, and sadly it’s not Stree. It’s the third installment in Dharmendra & Sons comedy franchise: Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se.

YPDPS opens Friday at MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs 25 min.

Gold and Satyameva Jayate carry over for a third week at MovieMax and the South Barrington 24, which also gives a second week to Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi.

Other Indian and Pakistani movies showing in the Chicago area this weekend:

Opening August 31: Joker

Another new Hindi movie opens in Chicago area theaters the weekend beginning August 31, 2012. Joker stars Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha in a comedy about aliens, not that you’d be able to infer that from the title.

Joker opens on Friday at the Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5 in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. Joker‘s runtime is listed as 2 hrs. 30 min. at AMC’s website but is reported to be closer to 1 hrs. 40 min.

Last weekend’s new release, Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi, carries over for a second week at the South Barrington 30 and Cantera 17. Ek Tha Tiger, which has earned $2,347,774 in its first two weeks in U.S. theaters, gets a third week at all three of the above theaters.

Other Indian movies showing at the Golf Glen 5 this weekend include Kevi Rite Jaish (Gujarati), Mr. Marumakan (Malayalam), Mugamoodi (Tamil), Simhasanam (Malayalam), Srimannaraya (Telugu), and Sudigadu (Telugu).

The Chicago South Asian Film Festival announced the lineup of films for this year’s festival, which runs from September 20-23. The fest kicks off with a gala showing of Heroine and closes with the world premiere of Shobhna’s Seven Nights, starring Raveena Tandon, Lillete Dubey, and Anupam Kher.

Opening August 31: Bodyguard and Bol

There are a flurry of new releases this week in honor of the Eid holiday, and Chicago theaters are getting in on the action starting on Wednesday. The marquee title is Bodyguard, starring Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor.

Bodyguard opens on August 31, 2011, at the Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5 in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 15 min.

Also opening in the same three theaters on Wednesday is the Pakistani film Bol. I’ve seen its language listed variously as Hindi and Urdu. It has a runtime of 2 hrs. 45 min.

These aren’t the only new films opening in the Chicago area this week. On Friday, September 2, the Hindi movie That Girl in Yellow Boots opens at the Golf Glen 5 and South Barrington 30. It’s runtime is listed as 1 hr. 43 min.

Other Indian movies showing at the Golf Glen 5 this week include Kandireega (Telugu), Mankatha (Tamil) and Teja Bhai & Family (Malayalam).
