Chennai Express is still going strong with earnings of $5,122,240 in the U.S. so far. It gets a fifth weekend at the South Barrington 30, Woodridge 18, and Cantera 17.

Other Indian movies showing at the Golf Glen 5 this weekend include the Tamil movies Madha Gaja Raja and Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam.

The teaser trailer from Dhoom 3 just released today, and it features some great footage shot in downtown Chicago. The movie releases on December 20, 2013.

Opening August 23: Madras Cafe

The Shahrukh Khan-Deepika Padukone romantic comedy Chennai Express — which has earned an incredible $4,014,657 in the U.S. so far — gets a third week at all four of the above theaters, plus the AMC River East 21 in Chicago and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge as well.

Other Indian movies showing in the Chicago area this weekend include the Tamil film Thalaivaa at the Cinemark at Seven Bridges in Woodridge.

Opening August 9: Chennai Express

Chennai Express opens in theaters on August 9, 2013, to one of the largest international releases in Indian film history. That’s evident locally, as the Shahrukh Khan-Deepika Padukone action comedy plays in seven Chicago area theaters.

Following the trend of many recent Hollywood releases, four area theaters have scheduled Thursday evening showings of Chennai Express: Regal Gardens Stadium 1-6 in Skokie, AMC Loews Crestwood 18 in Crestwood, AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. Chennai Express opens on Friday in three additional theaters: AMC River East 21 in Chicago, Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5 in Niles, and AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington. The movie has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 20 min.

Bollywood fans will note that Priyanka Chopra adds her voice to the Disney movie Planes, which also opens Friday.

After earning $647,112 in its opening weekend in U.S. theaters, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag carries over for a second week at all three of the above theaters, plus the AMC River East 21 in Chicago, Regal Gardens Stadium 1-6 in Skokie, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge. Many cinemas have reduced the number of daily showings of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag in order to accommodate this week’s four new Hollywood releases, so check the listings before you head to the theater.

If you just can’t get enough Irrfan Khan, Life of Pi gets a limited national re-release on Friday, showing locally at the South Barrington 30.

Other Indian movies playing at the Golf Glen 5 this weekend include Maryan (Tamil), Saptapadii (Gujarati), and the Telugu films Kevvu Keka and Sahasam.

Opening June 14: Fukrey

The comedy Fukrey opens in Chicago area theaters on June 14, 2013. While Excel Entertainment has a good track record, Fukrey worries me because I can’t tell what the story is. Here’s Excel’s official description (from IMDb):

“College. Three of the most important years of your life. Three years of studies (at times) and sheer indulgence. Indulgence in all the little pleasures that a carefree life has to offer. But it isn’t always about ragging, fuchacha parties, college fests, races, and churning out ways to whack some extra pocket money from your parents. It’s sometimes hard, ugly, and complicated. More so, when you really need to get admission in the coolest college in town and you know you don’t deserve it. And to top that, you get yourself involved in the most bizarre stations that could crack you into pieces before you could crack it.”

Huh? The trailer is only marginally more helpful:

Fukrey opens on Friday at the Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5 in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 20 min.

Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 carries over for a second week at the South Barrington 30. With U.S. earnings of $2,855,361 in two weeks, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani continues its impressive run for a third week at all three of the above theaters, plus the AMC River East 21 in Chicago, Regal Gardens Stadium 1-6 in Skokie, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge.

Other Indian movies showing at the Golf Glen 5 this weekend include Something Something (Telugu) and its Tamil version, Theeya Velai Seiyyanum Kumaru, Neram (Malayalam), and Thillu Mullu 2 (Tamil).

Bonus streaming video news: Ajay Devgn’s offensive comedy remake Himmatwala is now available on Netflix. The movie treats the physical and sexual abuse of women as a joke, so I advise against watching it.

Opening June 7: Yamla Pagla Deewana 2

The comedy sequel Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 opens in Chicago area theaters on June 7, 2013. I wasn’t crazy about the first one, and the guy in the orangutan suit in the trailer doesn’t give me much hope for the second.

YPD2 opens on Friday at the AMC River East 21 in Chicago, Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5 in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 30 min.

After posting massive first weekend returns of $1,568,677 in the U.S., Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani carries over at all of the above theaters, plus the Regal Gardens Stadium 1-6 in Skokie and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge.

Other Indian movies showing in the Chicago area this weekend include Iddarammayilatho (Telugu) at the Cinemark at Seven Bridges in Woodridge and at the Golf Glen 5, which is also showing Ladies and Gentlemen (Malayalam) and Prema Katha Chitram (Telugu).

Bonus streaming video news: Mere Dad Ki Maruti is now available for streaming on Netflix.

Opening May 31: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani makes a big splash in Chicago area theaters on May 31, 2013. The rom-com travelog stars Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone and features Kalki Koechlin and Aditya Roy Kapur in supporting roles.

It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 40 min.

Other Indian movies showing at the Golf Glen 5 this weekend include Iddarammayiltho (Telugu), Kutti Puli (Tamil), and Red Wine (Malayalam).

Opening January 11: Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola

I don’t want to set my hopes for Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola too high, but combining the skill of director Vishal Bharadwaj with the talents of actors Anushka Sharma and Imran Khan sounds like a recipe for success.

MKBKM opens in six Chicago area theaters on Friday, January 11, 2013: AMC River East 21 in Chicago, Regal Gardens Stadium 1-6 in Skokie, Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5 in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 30 min.

Last weekend’s new release, Table No. 21, opened to a paltry $31,658 in U.S. theaters, less than half of what Dabangg 2 earned in the same weekend (Dabangg 2‘s third weekend in theaters). Nevertheless, Table No. 21 carries over at the South Barrington 30.

Other Indian movies showing in the Chicago area this weekend include Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu (Telugu) at the River East 21 and Golf Glen 5, which is also showing Alex Pandian (Tamil) and Naayak (Telugu).
