Streaming Video News: December 11, 2025

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with today’s streaming debut of the Tamil film Kaantha. Today also marked the start of Yash Raj Films’ “Holiday Season” event, where two movies from the studio’s back catalog will be added to Netflix every day until December 27. Here’s what was added today, plus links to what we know is coming:

December 12: Bewakoofiyaan (2014) & Mere Dad Ki Maruthi (2013)
December 13: Bank Chor (2017) & Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! (2015)
December 15: Sui Dhaaga: Made in India (2018)
December 16: Daawat-e-Ishq (2014) & Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (2011)

December 18: Aurangzeb (2013) & Thugs of Hindostan (2018)
December 22: Aaha Kalyanam (2014/Tamil)
December 26: Hichki (2018)

The new Netflix Original Hindi comedy series Single Papa debuts on Friday.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with the addition of the Telugu film 12A Railway ColonyAmazon also added the Telugu version of Jatadhara, but not the Hindi version.

ZEE5 premiered a new Hindi film starring Radhika Apte today: Saali Mohabbat.

Months after Aamir Khan took his movies off of streaming services and made them available for rent on YouTube, another movie rental platform has debuted as a viewing option. The social cataloging service Letterboxd (follow me on Letterboxd here) has launched a virtual video store in specializing in hard-to-find films. One of the first movies they are offering is Anurag Kashyap’s thriller Kennedy, which played at the Cannes Film Festival and 2023 and then disappeared. It never released in theaters or on any streaming service. It’s now available for rent in select countries (not India, unfortunately) until January 9, 2026. In the US, a 48-hour rental costs $19.99 — not cheap, but fair considering it’s been impossible to find until now. You can rent Kennedy here, or check out the other movies available for rent.

Bollywood Box Office: December 23-25, 2016

Dangal closed out 2016 with the year’s biggest opening weekend in North America, on its way to being the year’s most successful Bollywood film. From December 23-25, 2016, Dangal earned $3,078,278 from 357 theaters* ($8,623 average). That was enough to rank it in 11th place among all movies at the North American box office for the holiday weekend, according to Box Office Mojo.

After adding its weekend take to its earnings from Wednesday night previews and Thursday showings, Dangal‘s official total is $3,907,781. Early reports have the movie earning about another $1 million on Monday, putting its six-day total at about $5 million. It will be the highest-earning Hindi film of the year in North America by the end of the week. Sultan currently holds that title with $6,191,282.

*Although Bollywood Hungama reports Dangal as showing in 331 theaters in the United States and 26 theaters in Canada, I suspect that 331 is actually the total number of theaters for all of North America combined (which would make Dangal‘s per-theater average $9,300). However, without access to Rentrak’s raw data to confirm my suspicions, I am using 357 as the total number of theaters in my calculations.

Other Hindi movies still in theaters:

  • Dear Zindagi: Week 5; $4,908 from seven theaters; $701 average; $2,446,761 total
  • Befikre: Week 3; $3,974 from fourteen theaters; $284 average; $810,760 total
  • Kahaani 2: Week 4; $974 from three theaters; $325 average; $488,278 total

In Theaters: December 12, 2014

With Aamir Khan’s P.K. looming over the horizon, no new Hindi films are opening in the Chicago area on Friday, December 12, 2014. Action Jackson carries over for a second weekend at the Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville and AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, which also holds over Happy Ending.

Starting Friday, the South Barrington 30 will carry Brahmin Bulls, an English-language feature that played at the Chicago South Asian Film Festival in September.

This weekend’s big new release is Rajnikanth’s Lingaa, which debuts locally on Thursday, December 11. MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, Muvico Rosemont 18 in Rosemont, and Cinemark at Seven Bridges in Woodridge are all carrying both the Tamil and Telugu versions of the film, both of which reportedly have English subtitles.
