Opening November 12: Prem Ratan Dhan Payo

One of the biggest releases of the year drops into Chicago area theaters on Thursday, November 12, 2015. Salman Khan stars opposite Sonam Kapoor in Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.

Other Indian movies showing in the Chicago area on Christmas include Mukunda (Telugu w/English subtitles) and Chinnadana Nee Kosam (Telugu w/English subtitles) at the Cinemark at Seven Bridges in Woodridge and MovieMax, which also carries Cousins (Malayalam) and the Tamil films Kayal, Kappal, Meaghamann, Pisasu, and Lingaa.

Opening October 24: Happy New Year

One of the most hotly anticipated Bollywood movies of the year hits theaters on October 24, 2014. Happy New Year — starring Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Boman Irani, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, and Vivaan Shah — gets a wide release in the Chicago area.

Several local theaters are offering preview showings of Happy New Year on Thursday night: MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, Muvico Rosemont 18 in Rosemont, Marcus Addison in Addison, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge. Opening October 2: Bang Bang and Haider

Instead of the industry standard Friday or Wednesday release date, two new Hindi movies open in the Chicago area on Thursday, October 2, 2014. The Hrithik Roshan-Katrina Kaif action flick Bang Bang — an official remake of Knight and Day — releases in more North American theaters than any other Bollywood movie to date.

Bang Bang — which has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 34 min. — opens in the following theaters on Thursday, October 2:

On Friday, October 3, Bang Bang opens in the following additional theaters:

Another movie opening with slightly less fanfare this weekend is Haider, director Vishal Bhardwaj’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. This is one of my most anticipated movies of 2014.

Haider opens on Thursday at the River East 21, Showplace Niles 12, South Barrington 30, and Woodridge 18. As with Bang Bang, Haider opens on Friday at the Regal Gardens 1-6 and Cantera 17. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 41 min.

The Telugu movie Govindudu Andarivadele carries over at the Rosemont 18, Seven Bridges, and Cinemark Tinseltown USA in North Aurora.

Opening November 28: Bullett Raja

Fans in the U.S. are getting a gift from Bollywood on Thanksgiving. Director Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Bullett Raja opens on Thursday, November 28, 2013, in America, a day before it opens in India. I’m pretty psyched for this black comedy, which stars Saif Ali Khan.

Bullett Raja opens on Thursday in four Chicago area theaters: AMC River East 21 in Chicago, Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5 in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 16 min.

Thursday also marks the last day to catch Singh Saab the Great in Chicago area theaters. It fails to garner a second week after earning just $138,127 in the U.S. in its opening weekend.

Last weekend’s other new release, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein, carries over for a second week at the Golf Glen 5, South Barrington 30, and Cantera 17.

The Hindi film with the largest presence in Chicago area theaters remains Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, which gets a third week at the Golf Glen 5, South Barrington 30, and Cantera 17, plus the Regal Gardens Stadium 1-6 in Skokie and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge. So far, it’s earned $2,269,358 in the U.S.

If you still haven’t caught Krrish 3, the South Barrington 30 carries it over for a fifth week with one show daily. Its U.S. earnings stand at $2,179,948.

Other Indian movies showing at the Golf Glen 5 this weekend include Geethaanjali (Malayalam), Naveena Saraswathi Sabatham (Tamil), and Venkatadri Express (Telugu).

Happy Thanksgiving!

Opening August 15: Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara

Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara opens in the Chicago area on Thursday, August 15, 2013.

OUATIMD opens on Thursday at the AMC River East 21 in Chicago, Regal Gardens Stadium 1-6 in Skokie, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 38 min.

After breaking first-weekend box office records with U.S. earnings of $2,416,513, Chennai Express carries over for a second week at all of the above theaters, plus the AMC Loews Crestwood 18 in Crestwood and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge.

Other Indian movies showing in the Chicago area this weekend include the Tamil film Thalaivaa at the Cinemark at Seven Bridges in Woodridge.

Opening August 9: Chennai Express

Chennai Express opens in theaters on August 9, 2013, to one of the largest international releases in Indian film history. That’s evident locally, as the Shahrukh Khan-Deepika Padukone action comedy plays in seven Chicago area theaters.

Following the trend of many recent Hollywood releases, four area theaters have scheduled Thursday evening showings of Chennai Express: Regal Gardens Stadium 1-6 in Skokie, AMC Loews Crestwood 18 in Crestwood, AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. Chennai Express opens on Friday in three additional theaters: AMC River East 21 in Chicago, Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5 in Niles, and AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington. The movie has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 20 min.

Bollywood fans will note that Priyanka Chopra adds her voice to the Disney movie Planes, which also opens Friday.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag carries over for a fifth week at the South Barrington 30 and Cantera 17. Its total U.S. earnings stand at $1,572,690.

Starting Friday, the Golf Glen 5 carries the Tamil film Thalaivaa and its Telugu version, Anna — Born to Lead.

Opening April 5: Chashme Baddoor

For the second week in a row, a Hindi remake of an ’80s film hits Chicago area theaters. This time its Chashme Baddoor, which stars Ali Zafar and is distinguished from the original — Chashme Buddoor — by a slight spelling change in the title.

Chashme Baddoor opens on Friday, April 5, 2013, at the Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5 in Niles and AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 30 min.

Last weekend’s remake, Himmatwala, performed poorly at the box office, earning just $197,770 from 99 U.S. theaters. Nevertheless, it carries over at the Golf Glen 5, South Barrington 30, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville.

The other big Indian release of note this week is the Telugu film Baadshah. It opens on Thursday, April 4, at the Golf Glen 5, Cinemark Century 12 Evanston in Evanston (one-time-only showing on Thursday), Cinemark Century Stratford Square in Bloomingdale, and Cinemark at Seven Bridges in Woodridge. It has a runtime of 2 hrs. 38 min. and is showing locally without English subtitles.

Other Indian films playing at the Golf Glen 5 this weekend include the Tamil movies Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga and Settai. The Century Stratford Square has the Punjabi movie Sadda Haq, which is showing with English subtitles.
