Streaming Video News: October 18, 2019

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with the streaming debut of Saaho. It’s not available in Hindi — that version is headed to Netflix in November — but it is available in Kannada, Malayalam (standard and 4K UHD), Tamil (standard and 4K UHD), and Telugu (standard and 4K UHD).* Dozens of other Indian movies have been added in the last week, including the new Vir Das travel series Jestination Unknown and the following 2019 releases:

Make sure to scroll down the Prime page past the new additions to the Expiring Soon section, because I found many more films set to leave Prime by the end of the month since posting this list of 60 or so expiring titles.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with the addition of the Netflix original Hindi film Upstarts. I added the Australian series The Unlisted to the list as well. It’s about a pair of Desi twins, and the first episode takes place during their family’s Diwali celebrations. Timely!

October got off to a slow start on these two streaming video services, and there’s little on the horizon for the rest of the month. According to Bollywood Buff, Batla House comes to Prime in India on October 11, although that date may not apply to the United States and Canada. The only new Hindi release on the docket for Netflix is their straight-to-streaming film Upstarts, starring Bhavesh Joshi Superhero‘s Priyanshu Painyuli. Upstarts debuts on Netflix October 18.

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with dozens of new additions in recent days. The highest profile newcomer is the Amazon Original Hindi series The Family Man, starring Manoj Bajpayee as a spy struggling to balance his work and family life. Amazon is so confident of the series’ international breakout potential that they had the cast record an English dub of the dialogue as well. It’s also available in 4K Ultra HD in both Hindi and English. Other 2019 releases just added include:

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with the addition of Kabir Singh. The 2016 horror film 1920 London is poised to expire on September 24.

Kabhi Kabhie, Salaam Namaste, and Vijay all expire on September 25, followed by Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year on September 27. I’ll post expiration dates as they appear. In the meantime, if you’d like to prioritize watching YRF movies on Prime before they migrate to their new home (probably Hotstar), here’s a Wikipedia list of YRF releases.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix because a bunch of Indian movies are set to expire on September 15:

Kabir Singh comes to Netflix in India on September 19, but I haven’t seen confirmation of its US availability yet, so stay tuned. In other Netflix news, Karan Johar signed a multi-year contract to produce fiction and non-fiction content exclusively for the streaming service.

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with the addition of the excellent 2019 thriller Article 15. Based on my experience, it’s a good movie to recommend to people who don’t normally watch Hindi films. Other recent additions include the 2019 Tamil release Watchman and the 2018 Telugu movies C/o Kancharapalem and Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi.
