Streaming Video News: January 23, 2025

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with today’s premiere of the Telugu series Sivarapalli, a remake of the Hindi show Panchayat. Prime also announced a February 7 release date for Boman Irani’s debut directorial The Mehta Boys, which I am very excited about.

Today’s new Hindi film premiere is R. Madhavan’s Hisaab Barabar, which launched on ZEE5.

The Hindi romantic comedy Sweet Dreams debuted on Disney+ Hotstar in India today, but it hasn’t shown up on Hulu in the United States yet. I’ll update my list of Bollywood movies on Hulu if it does.

Nothing new on Netflix this week, but the short documentary film Anuja — which is coming to Netflix soon — was nominated for an Oscar today. I’ll update my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix when it gets a release date. In the meantime, check out my preview of the Valentine’s Day romcom Dhoom Dhaam, starring Yami Gautam and Pratik Gandhi.

Streaming Video News: May 16, 2024

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with today’s addition of the theatrical release Madgaon Express. This follows last week’s addition of Sidharth Malhotra’s Yodha.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with a June 7 expiration date for the horror comedy Stree. It’s definitely worth prioritizing.

You’ve probably noticed that it’s been quiet on the streaming services as well as in theaters. We’re in the middle of cricket season, a time when producers and distributors traditionally pull back on releases while audience attention is elsewhere. The Indian Premier League is happening this month followed by the Cricket World Cup all throughout June.

So what releases are on the horizon? The only Indian Original streaming title with an announced release date is Season 3 of Panchayat, which comes to Amazon Prime on May 28:

We can predict some likely streaming debut dates for theatrical releases, which typically wind up on OTT 8 weeks after hitting theaters. All these dates are all approximate, and the streaming service may be subject to change:

May 24 – Crew on Netflix
June 5 – Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (I’ve seen both Netflix and Prime rumored)
June 5 – Maidaan on Amazon Prime
June 14 – Do Aur Do Pyaar on Hulu
June 14 – Love Sex Aur Dhokha 2 on Netflix

Other smaller or India-only theatrical releases may also get global streaming distribution, but these are the biggest titles we’re waiting for.

In the meantime, this is a great time to catch up on some of the 2024 releases you might have missed. My 5 favorite films of the year so far are:

  1. Amar Singh Chamkila (on Netflix)
  2. Crakk (on Hulu)
  3. Ae Watan Mere Watan (on Amazon Prime)
  4. Bhakshak (on Netflix)
  5. Shaitaan (on Netflix)

What are your favorite films of 2024 so far? Leave a comment and let me know!

Streaming Video News: May 20, 2022

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with two big additions to the catalog: Shahid Kapoor’s Hindi remake of Jersey and the Hindi-dubbed version of RRR, which was preponed from its previously announced June 2 streaming release date. The original Telugu version of RRR is streaming now on Zee5, along with dubbed versions in Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam.

Netflix just announced that Season 2 of the crime drama She will release on June 17. And this is the last week to watch Raees (which I sort of liked) on Netflix before it expires May 26.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with the Telugu action flick Acharya (which has Kannada, Malayalam, and Tamil audio options as well). Earlier in the week, Amazon debuted Season 2 of its original Hindi series Panchayat.

Finally, I added the 2022 films 12th Man (Malayalam) and Bhala Thandhanana (Telugu) to my list of Bollywood movies on Hulu. The new Hindi series Escaype Live debuted on Disney+ Hotstar in India yesterday, but it looks like we might not get it on Hulu in the United States.

Prime Video Presents India 2022 Event

Amazon Prime Video India held a big press event today to announce the slate of original and licensed Indian content they plan to release over the next two years. The company’s YouTube channel published a short video with footage from some of the featured titles:

Variety’s Naman Ramachandran posted descriptions for the entire slate of new series and movies in the works. His article also mentions all of the series set to return with new seasons, including Breathe: Into the Shadows, Comicstaan, The Family Man, Four More Shots Please!, Made in Heaven, Mirzapur, Mumbai Diaries, Paatal Lok, and Panchayat.

The presentation also included mention of three “special collaborations” and co-productions, which will presumably get theatrical releases before streaming on Prime. Those are Tiku Weds Shiru (starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Avneet Kaur), Neeyat (Vidya Balan), and Ram Setu (Akshay Kumar).

On top of all that, Amazon went ahead and announced all of the titles that fall under their licensing associations with production houses Ajay Devgn Ffilms, Dharma Productions, Excel Entertainment, and Yash Raj Films for their forthcoming theatrical releases. Here are all the Hindi movies that will make their way onto Prime after their theatrical runs are over (by order of theatrical release date if known, then alphabetical):

  • Prithviraj
  • Govinda Naam Mera

Streaming Video News: April 3, 2020

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with more than a dozen Indian titles added in the last two days, including the new Hindi series Panchayat, which looks kinda good. Newly added 2020 releases include:

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix because Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is now available for streaming. (Thanks for the alert, Courtney!) And check out my post “New Indian Movies & TV Series on Netflix: March 2020” at What’s on Netflix, just to make sure there’s nothing you missed last month. 🙂

Netflix released the trailer for its new dark comedy series Hasmukh, which stars Vir Das as a comic who resorts to murder to overcome his stage fright. Hasmukh debuts on Netflix April 17. It’s worth watching the trailer below just to see Manoj Pahwa’s ridiculous wig.
