Streaming Video News: January 29, 2026

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix because the big day has arrived: Dhurandhar is now streaming on Netflix. Earlier this week, the streamer added the Telugu film Champion to its catalogue. Netflix also released a trailer for Season 2 of the Original Punjabi series Kohrra, which debuts February 11:

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with today’s premiere of the new Hindi thriller series Daldal, starring Bhumi Pednekar. Earlier this week, the streamer added Karthi’s Tamil film Vaa Vaathiyaar to the catalogue just two weeks after its theatrical release.

It’s kind of a bummer of a week on Hulu in the United States as we didn’t get either of the 2025 theatrical releases that arrived on JioHotstar in India: the Hindi film Gustaakh Ishq and the Malayalam movie Sarvam Maya. I suspect this will be the norm going forward, with Hulu getting the Hotstar Specials original series and some random cable shows, but little else. I’m not optimistic about the long-term future of Indian content on Hulu as its parent company Disney figures out how to streamline its streaming services.

Streaming Video News: January 29, 2025

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with the streaming debut of the Telugu blockbuster Pushpa 2: The Rule. Netflix’s “Reloaded Version” has 23 minutes of extra footage, bumping the runtime up to nearly 4 hours. Dubbed dialogue is available in Hindi, Malayalam, and Tamil, with Kannada coming soon.

Netflix also announced a February 5 release date for the Oscar-nominated short documentary film Anuja:

The new Hindi series The Secret of the Shiledars is scheduled to debut on Disney+ Hotstar in India tomorrow, but we’ll see if we actually get it here in the US. Hulu’s track record for adding new Indian Originals has been bad this month. I’ll update my list of Bollywood movies on Hulu accordingly. [Update: We got it! The Secret of the Shildedars is now streaming, with dubbed versions in Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu.]

The first week of February looks to be a busy one on the streamers. Besides Anuja on Netflix, ZEE5 releases the Hindi film Mrs. — starring Sanya Malhotra — on Friday, February 7 (likely the afternoon of February 6 in the US). That same day, Amazon Prime premieres The Mehta Boys, Boman Irani’s directorial debut. It’s gonna be a busy week!

In Theaters: January 29, 2021

Movie theaters across the Chicago area are once again allowed to reopen with restricted capacity. Some theaters have chosen to remain closed for the time being, but plenty are back in business. That said, opportunities to watch Indian movies in Chicago area theaters are few and far between the weekend beginning January 29, 2021.

The Tamil film Master — which became available for streaming on Amazon Prime today — opens Friday at the ShowPlace ICON at Roosevelt Collection in Chicago, AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington, and Cinemark at Seven Bridges in Woodridge. The ShowPlace ICON offers Master as one of the options in its “Private Showing” theater rental program for a price of $166.88. The cost of private rental — which accommodates a group of up to 20 people — is less than the cost of 12 regular priced adult tickets ($14.50).

Also starting Friday, the Seven Bridges theater carries the Telugu movie 30 Rojullo Preminchadam Ela, which is available in the theater’s “Private Watch Party” program for $149. Cinemark’s private rental program has the same 20-person limit and costs about the same as 17 regular priced tickets ($8.75) or 26 matinee tickets ($5.75).

Opening January 29: Saala Khadoos and Mastizaade

Two new Hindi movies hit Chicago area theaters on January 29, 2016. Saala Khadoos looks the more promising of the two, with R. Madhavan playing a disgraced boxer who trains Ritika Singh to fight.

Saala Khadoos opens on Friday at MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. The movie was shot simultaneously in Hindi and Tamil, and MovieMax also has the Tamil version, Irudhi Suttru. Saala Khadoos has a listed runtime of 1 hr. 50 min.

The weekend’s other new release is the sex comedy Mastizaade, starring Sunny Leone, Vir Das, and Tusshar Kapoor. Last weekend saw the release of another sex comedy starring Tusshar Kapoor, and that movie totally flopped in the US. The timing of this could not be worse, regardless of whether Mastizaade is any good (which seems unlikely).

Mastizaade opens on Friday at the South Barrington 30, Cantera 17, and AMC River East 21 in Chicago. It has a listed runtime of 1 hr. 48 min.

Airlift carries over for a second week at the River East 21, MovieMax, South Barrington 30, Cantera 17, Regal Gardens Stadium 1-6 in Skokie, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge. MovieMax also holds over Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 and Wazir.

Other Indian Movies playing in the Chicago area this weekend include Seethamma Ramayya Sitralu (Telugu) at Muvico Rosemont 18 in Rosemont and MovieMax, which also carries Pavada (Malayalam), Aranmanai 2 (Tamil), Lachimdeviki O Lekkundhi (Telugu), Nannaku Prematho (Telugu), Soggade Chinni Nayana (Telugu w/English subtitles), Rajini Murugan (Tamil), and Two Countries (Malayalam).
