Opening January 25: Manikarnika and Thackeray

Two new Hindi films hit Chicago area theaters on January 26, 2019. The wider release of the two goes to Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, starring Kangana Ranuat. In response to right-wing threats leveled against the period drama, Ranaut said: “If they don’t stop then they should know I am also a Rajput and I will destroy each one of them.” Awesome.

Manikarnika opens Friday at the AMC River East 21 in Chicago, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC Rosemont 18 in Rosemont, AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington, Marcus Addison Cinema in Addison, Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville, and AMC Naperville 16 in Naperville. MovieMax is also showing the film in Telugu and Tamil at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Manikarnika has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 53 min.

The weekend’s other new release is Thackeray, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui as the far-right political leader Bal Thackeray.

Thackeray also opens Friday at MovieMax, Cantera 17, and the AMC Niles 12 in Niles. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 10 min.

Uri: The Surgical Strike carries over for a third week at the River East 21, MovieMax, Rosemont 18, South Barrington 24, Cantera 17, and the AMC Woodridge 18 in Woodridge.

The South Barrington 24 also holds over The Accidental Prime Minister and Simmba.

Opening January 25: Padmaavat

After many trials and tribulations, the epic period drama Padmaavat (nee Padmavati) finally hits Chicago area theaters on January 25, 2018.

Padmaavat — which has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 44 min. — opens on Thursday in the following formats at the theaters listed below:

IMAX, 3D, and standard: AMC South Barrington 24 in South Barrington

3D and Standard: AMC River East 21 in Chicago, AMC Showplace Niles 12 in Niles, AMC Dine-In Rosemont 18 in Rosemont, AMC Showplace Naperville 16 in Naperville, AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge, and AMC Loews Crestwood 18 in Crestwood

3D only: Regal Round Lake Beach Stadium 18 in Round Lake Beach and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville

Standard only: MovieMax Cinemas in Niles and Marcus Addison Cinema in Addison

Tiger Zinda Hai carries over for a sixth week at the South Barrington 24.

Other Indian movies showing in the Chicago area this weekend:

Opening January 25: Kaabil and Raees

The first big Bollywood clash of 2017 takes place on January 25 with the release of Kaabil and Raees. Kaabil — starring Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam — gets the wider release of the two films in the Chicago area.

Kaabil opens on Wednesday at MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, Muvico Rosemont 18 in Rosemont, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, Marcus Addison Cinema in Addison, Century Stratford Square in Bloomingdale, Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 20 min.

Opposite Kaabil is Raees, a gangster drama starring Shah Rukh Khan. Even though it’s opening in fewer local theaters (and presumably fewer theaters nationally), I expect Raees to emerge the winner at the North American box office based on SRK’s star power alone.

Raees opens on Wednesday at MovieMax, Rosemont 18, South Barrington 30, Cantera 17, Woodridge 18, and AMC River East 21 in Chicago. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 30 min.

Opening January 25: Race 2

Of all the movies that I never needed to see, a sequel to 2008’s idiotic Race is near the top of my list. Nevertheless, Race 2 hits the big screen on January 25, 2013. Let’s hope Deepika Padukone and Jacqueline Fernandez can help returnees Saif Ali Khan and Anil Kapoor make this Race a more enjoyable experience than the first one.

Race 2 opens on Friday at five Chicago area theaters: AMC River East 21 in Chicago, Regal Gardens Stadium 1-6 in Skokie, Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5 in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 30 min.

The only other Hindi film showing locally is Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, which gets a third week at the South Barrington 30.

Other Indian movies showing at the Golf Glen 5 this weekend include Naayak (Telugu), Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu (Telugu), Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22 (Punjabi), and both the Tamil and Telugu versions of Vishwaroopam.
