Opening February 13: Roy and MSG

The romantic thriller Roy — starring Ranbir Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez, and Arjun Rampal — hits Chicago area theaters on February 13, 2015.

Roy opens on Friday at MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 26 min.

Also opening at MovieMax on Friday is MSG: The Messenger of God, which has a runtime of 3 hrs. 17 min.

Shamitabh carries over for a second week at MovieMax, Cantera 17 and South Barrington 30, which also holds over Baby for a fourth week.

Other Indian movies showing in the Chicago area this weekend include Temper (Telugu w/no subtitles) at MovieMax, Muvico Rosemont 18 in Rosemont, Century Stratford Square in Bloomingdale, and Cinemark at Seven Bridges in Woodridge, and Yennai Arindhaal (Tamil w/English subtitles) at MovieMax and Seven Bridges. MovieMax also carries Anegan (Tamil) and Malli Malli Idi Rani Roju (Telugu), as well as English-language coverage of the India vs. Pakistan Cricket World Cup match on Saturday night.

Opening January 30: Hawaizaada

The historical fiction film Hawaizaada is the only new Hindi movie opening in the Chicago area on January 30, 2015.

Hawaizaada opens on Friday at MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 33 min.

Baby carries over for a second weekend at MovieMax, South Barrington 30, Cantera 17, and AMC Showplace Niles 12 in Niles. Both Dolly Ki Doli and PK continue their runs at MovieMax and the South Barrington 30.

Other Indian movies showing at MovieMax this weekend include Isai (Tamil), Ladies and Gentlemen (Telugu), Mariyam Mukku (Malayalam), and Pataas (Telugu).

With two heavy hitters — Bang Bang and Haider — coming to theaters next weekend, no new Hindi films are opening in the Chicago area on Friday, September 26, 2014. The most widely available of the older releases is Khoobsurat, which gets a second week at the Regal Gardens Stadium 1-6 in Skokie, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville.

Daawat-e-Ishq and Finding Fanny carry over at MovieMax, South Barrington 30, and Cantera 17.

The wildly popular Telugu movie Aagadu carries over for a second week at Muvico Rosemont 18 in Rosemont, Century Stratford Square in Bloomingdale, and Cinemark at Seven Bridges in Woodridge.

Other Indian movies showing at MovieMax this weekend include include Madras (Tamil), Loukyam (Telugu), Power (Telugu), Sapthamashree Thaskaraha (Malayalam), and Aranmanai (Tamil). The Telugu movie Govindudu Andarivadele opens at MovieMax on Tuesday, September 30.

Opening September 19: Daawat-e-Ishq and Khoobsurat

Two Bollywood romantic comedies open in the Chicago area on September 19, 2014. First up is Daawat-e-Ishq (“Feast of Love“) starring Aditya Roy Kapur and my girl Parineeti Chopra.

Daawat-e-Ishq opens on Friday at the AMC River East 21 in Chicago, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. It has a listed runtime of 1 hr. 59 min.

Also releasing this weekend is Khoobsurat (“Beautiful“), starring Sonam Kapoor and Fawad Afzal Khan.

Khoobsurat opens on Friday at MovieMax, South Barrington 30, and Cantera 17. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 10 min.

After a strong opening last weekend, Finding Fanny carries over for a second week at all four of the theaters carrying Daawat-e-Ishq, plus the Regal Gardens Stadium 1-6 in Skokie.

Mary Kom gets a third week at the South Barrington 30 and Cantera 17.

The Telugu movie Aagadu gets a head start on the competition, opening Thursday night at the Muvico Rosemont 18 in Rosemont, Century Stratford Square in Bloomingdale, and Cinemark at Seven Bridges in Woodridge.

Opening September 12: Finding Fanny

While it appears that Creature 3D isn’t releasing in the U.S. (boo!), Chicago area Bollywood fans will get to see one of the most intriguing movies of the year on September 12, 2014: Finding Fanny.

Finding Fanny opens on Friday at the AMC River East 21 in Chicago, Regal Gardens Stadium 1-6 in Skokie, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. While MovieMax specifies that it’s carrying the Hindi version of the film, the rest of the theaters are presumably carrying the version with English dialogue. Finding Fanny has a listed runtime of 1 hr. 42 min.

After a respectable opening weekend in North American theaters, Mary Kom carries over at the River East 21, MovieMax, South Barrington 30, Cantera 17, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge.

Singham Returns holds on for a fifth weekend at MovieMax, South Barrington 30, and Cantera 17. MovieMax and South Barrington are both carrying Mardaani for a fourth weekend as well.

Other Indian movies showing at MovieMax this weekend include Sigaram Thodu (Tamil), Bhaiyya Bhaiyya (Malayalam), and the Telugu movies Power, Anukshanam, Boochamma Boochodu, and Rabhasa.

Opening September 5: Mary Kom

The Bollywood sports biopic Mary Kom releases in Chicago area theaters on September 5, 2014. Priyanka Chopra plays the Indian boxing champ and bronze medalist at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Mary Kom opens on Friday at the AMC River East 21 in Chicago, Regal Gardens Stadium 1-6 in Skokie, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 4 min.

Raja Natwarlal and Singham Returns carry over at the Cantera 17, MovieMax, and South Barrington 30. Both MovieMax and South Barrington 30 are also holding over Mardaani.

The Emraan Hashmi heist flick Raja Natwarlal opens in Chicago area theaters on August 29, 2014. The title roughly translates to “King Con,” so why on earth did they not use that title instead? It’s short, alliterative, and plays on the title King Kong. Movie studios: hire me.

Ajay Devgn’s Singham Returns opens in the Chicago area on August 15, 2014. The followup to 2011’s Singham features Kareena Kapoor Khan as the female lead, replacing the original film’s heroine, Kajal Agarwal.

Akshay Kumar’s latest comedy, Entertainment (formerly titled It’s Entertainment), opens in the Chicago area on August 8, 2014. The trailer makes my head hurt.

Entertainment opens on Friday at the AMC Showplace Niles 12 in Niles, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. It has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 19 min.

Kick carries over for a third weekend at all of the above theaters, plus the Regal Gardens Stadium 1-6 in Skokie.

Though not a Hindi movie, the culinary drama The Hundred-Foot Journey features Bollywood veterans Om Puri and Juhi Chawla. It releases nationwide on Friday.

With studios unwilling to go up against the juggernaut Kick, there are no new Hindi movies opening in the Chicago area on Friday, August 1, 2014. After a terrific opening weekend, Kick carries over for a second week at seven local theaters: AMC River East 21 in Chicago, Regal Gardens Stadium 1-6 in Skokie, MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC Showplace Niles 12 in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville, and AMC Loews Woodridge 18 in Woodridge.

The only other Bollywood movie showing in the area this weekend is Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania at the South Barrington 30.
