Streaming Video News: January 1, 2016

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with a ton of new additions to the catalog. Netflix kicked off 2016 by adding seventeen (!) Hindi movies to the streaming catalog, along with a number of movies in other Indian languages, most notably director Mani Ratnam’s 2015 Tamil hit OK Kanmani. I added a category for films in other Indian languages at the bottom of my Netflix page. (January 2 update: Dum Laga Ke Haisha is also now on Netflix!)

Here’s a list of all the Bollywood films added to Netflix today:

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! and Piku are two of my favorite movies of 2015, and I can’t wait to check out Randeep Hooda in Main Aur Charles, which didn’t open in US theaters. A number of these films — like Katiyabaaz and Kshay — were hits on the festival circuit, and this is the first opportunity for a wide audience to see them. Same for the Gujarati film The Good Road, India’s official submission to the 86th Oscars, which was also added today.

I am so excited about this!! Especially about OK Kanmani, one of my favorite films of last year. Kathy, I urge you to watch it. You will be delighted to see Prakash Raj in such a different role, as a doting husband of his wife with Alzheimers. It introduced me to the actor Dulquer Salmaan as well (and then on to the world of Malayalam films!)

I’m also looking forward to seeing Main Aur Charles! I’d like to rewatch Detective Byomkesh, too.

I’m so excited for OK Kanmani, Mel. I’ve loved Ratnam’s Hindi films, and I remember how much you enjoyed this one when you saw it in the theater. Katiyabaaz has been on my radar for a while, too.

I’ll add my voice to the chorus for Ok Kanmani, Kathy. Can’t wait for you to review so we can discuss it. I loved the characters, and the leads are great together. (With all the snow in Virginia, I’ve had lots of time to sample the offerings on Netflix…)

Good luck digging out of all that snow, Liz! I was wondering why traffic to my Netflix page was so busy on Saturday until I realized it was because of everyone who was snowed in on the East Coast. My website had its busiest day ever thanks to the storm!

I actually didn’t see it in the theater. I think I bought it on Google Play! But now all the friends who I want to recommend it to are more likely to view it with their Netflix subscription.
