Streaming Video News: July 3, 2025

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with today’s world premiere of the Amazon Original Telugu comedy Uppu Kappurambu.

Today, ZEE5 premiered Abhishek Bachchan’s new film Kaalidhar Laapata, a remake of the 2019 Tamil movie K.D.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with yesterday’s streaming debut of Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film Thug Life. If you missed any of the Indian content added to Netflix in June, check out my monthly recap for What’s on Netflix. While you’re there, check out my list of reality game shows to watch on Netflix if you’re a fan of the games in Squid Game. I’m proud of it.

There’s no sign of the new Hotstar Indian Original shows Good Wife or Mistry on Hulu, which is par for the course these days. But, hey, they just added the 1987 film Imaandaar, so that’s something.

Since we’re at the mid-point of the year — and there’s not much new to watch on a holiday weekend — here are my Top 5 films of 2025 so far (with the caveat that I haven’t seen any of the Hindi theatrical releases from May or June yet):

  1. Mrs.★★★½
  2. Stolen  — ★★★½
  3. Superboys of Malegaon★★★½
  4. Dhoom Dhaam★★★½
  5. Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins★★★

Bonus: There’s a discount on A Nice Indian Boy for rent or purchase at Amazon right now. It’s a great feel-good movie!

Have a nice 3-day weekend! — Kathy

Opening July 3: Second Hand Husband

One new Bollywood movie opens in Chicago area theaters on July 3, 2015. Second Hand Husband features the Hindi-film debuts of Punjabi singer/actor Gippy Grewal and Govinda’s daughter, Tina Ahuja. With no other new Bollywood films to compete with, Independence Day  weekend is a perfect time to launch two untested stars in the US. It also helps that the story — a lawyer (Tina) tries to find a new husband for her fiance’s ex-wife in order to get him out of his alimony payments — is accessible and ripe for comedy.

Second Hand Husband opens on Friday at MovieMax Cinemas in Niles, AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington, and Century Stratford Square in Bloomingdale. It has a listed runtime of 1 hr. 44 min.

ABCD 2 gets a third weekend at MovieMax, South Barrington 30, and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville. Dil Dhadakne Do gets a fifth weekend at the South Barrington 30 and Cantera 17.

Other Indian movies showing at MovieMax this weekend include Papanasam (Tamil), Chandrettan Evideya (Malayalam), Tiger (Telugu), Indru Netru Naalai (Tamil), and Premam (Malayalam).

Have a safe and happy 4th of July!

Opening July 3: Lootera

In order to take advantage of Thursday’s Independence Day holiday, Chicago area theaters are opening the period romance Lootera on Wednesday, July 3, 2013: two days before it releases in India. The trailer for the movie is beautiful.

The AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington and Regal Cantera Stadium 17 in Warrenville both debut Lootera with limited showings on Wednesday night before switching to a full day of showings on Thursday, July 4. The movie has a listed runtime of 2 hrs. 20 min.

Opening July 3: Kambakkht Ishq

This holiday weekend marks the long-awaited release of Kambakkht Ishq, a romantic comedy starring Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor. The pair play a bickering stuntman and supermodel who try to break up a wedding. As with most Akshay Kumar movies, expect slapstick wackiness.

Of interest to American audiences are cameo appearances by actors Sylvester Stallone, Denise Richards and Brandon Routh. The majority of the movie was shot at Universal Studios in Hollywood, a first for Indian cinema.

Kambakkht Ishq will open in the Chicago area at the AMC Loews Pipers Alley 4 in Chicago, the Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5 in Niles, the AMC South Barrington 30 in South Barrington and the AMC Cantera 30 in Warrenville. The Cantera 30 is featuring a special midnight showing of Kambakkht Ishq on Thursday night (technically 12:01 a.m. Friday). Eros Entertainment’s website has a list of all theaters in the U.S. and Canada showing the movie, which has a listed runtime of 2 hrs 20 min.

Last week’s big Bollywood release, New York, made an impressive showing in U.S. theaters. It earned nearly $500,000, to finish in 16th place last weekend, with a better per-screen average than the debut of Cameron Diaz’s film My Sister’s Keeper.

New York is carrying over for a second week at the AMC Cantera 30, the AMC South Barrington 30, and the Big Cinemas Golf Glen 5. It’s definitely worth checking out; I gave it 3.5/4 stars in my review.

The other Indian movies playing in the Chicago area this weekend are all in Telugu, including Oy! at the Golf Glen 5, and Kick and Evaraina Epudaina at the Sathyam Cinemas in Downers Grove.
