Movie Review: Bloody Ishq (2024)

Don’t let the above star-rating fool you — Bloody Ishq is a helluva fun movie. It’s just terribly made.

Director Vikram Bhatt’s fascination with computer-generated imagery dates back at least as far as 2013’s unintentional comedy gem Creature 3D, which featured the titular CGI monster. 2022’s Judaa Hoke Bhi marked the first time Bhatt would shoot a film entirely in a virtual production studio, generating just about every image in the movie apart from the actors using Unreal Engine (most commonly used for making video games).

Bloody Ishq presumably follows suit, since the entire movie looks like it was shot in front of a green screen. Other than the actors and the props they interact with, everything else on screen is computer generated. It looks like trash.

Bhatt’s latest horror venture — co-directed by Manish P. Chavan and written by Mahesh Bhatt and Shubham Dhiman — features his standard blend of supernatural mystery with sexy undertones. Neha (Avika Gor) survives a near-drowning with major gaps in her memory. She returns to the remote island mansion she lives in with her husband Romesh (Vardhaan Puri), but there’s something malevolent in the house.

While Neha is stuck on the island, too fearful to go near the water to ferry to the Scottish mainland, her best friend “Ayesha” (Ram Setu‘s Jeniffer Piccinato) appears in the house out of nowhere. Ayesha reminds Neha that she’d been looking into Romesh’s shady dealings before her accident, including the suspicious death of Romesh’s father.

The trouble is, Neha can’t remember anything — until she plays the piano! Then she’s able to see letters floating in the air like they’re part of some futuristic hologram that she can rearrange with her hands to form the title of a book she was reading before she almost died.

She only utilizes this magical ability once.

Herein lies the problem with the movie. Shooting in a virtual environment allows Bhatt to indulge whims without any regard to the shackles of physics, and he takes way too much advantage of this freedom. Why stop at ghosts when you can CGI mind powers, explosions, or a pointless car race? Having to adhere to the laws of physics forces a kind of economy of space and movement that in turn shapes the plot. Absent those restraints, Bloody Ishq‘s story spirals out of control.

It would be one thing if the use of CGI was limited to things that couldn’t be done safely or easily in reality — like having Neha scale a cliff in a mini skirt — but all the sets are CGI, too. Bhatt isn’t creating a whole world from scratch, a la James Cameron’s Avatar. It’s not hard to build a bedroom set or find a cafe to film in. Bloody Ishq was made the way it was in order to save money, and the final product looks cheap.

However, all the things that make Bloody Ishq a movie of low quality help to make it a film of vast unintentional comedy. I enjoyed watching every second of it. The floaty unreality of the CGI mansion interior and the way characters move throughout it is funny. As a bonus, the home is decorated with the same kind of creepy paintings as the haunted hotel in Bhatt’s goofy 2015 horror flick Khamoshiyan.

The acting is not good, although one can hardly blame Gor and Puri for not doing their best work in front of a green screen. Gor plays Neha in overdrive, culminating in a hilarious scene in which she reacts to someone impaled with a stake by screaming, “First aid! First aid!” and hunting for a kit full of BAND-AIDs and Bactine.

There is nary a Scottish accent to be heard among the “Scottish” extras. The sex scenes are not at all sexy, consisting mostly of closeups of faces that make it unclear as to whether the participants were even in the same room during filming.

Perhaps the secret to enjoying Bloody Ishq is a matter of calibrating expectations. Revel in all the things that don’t work about it, and you’ll have fun. Bloody Ishq is so bad it’s good.

Streaming Video News: October 14, 2019

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with dozens of upcoming expiration dates. Amazon’s content licensing deals for the back catalogs of Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and the Bhatt brothers’ Vishesh Films are up, which means that fifty-two Hindi films will leave Prime before the end of the month. Recent releases like Dharma’s Kalank and Vishesh’s Begum Jaan are sticking around, but the classic Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… and the guilty pleasure horror flick Khamoshiyan are on the way out. The Dharma movies are likely heading to Netflix, but I’m not sure about the Vishesh pictures. Here’s a list of all the titles on their way out, organized by expiration date:

Streaming Video News: July 9, 2017

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Heera because the Amazon channel just increased its Hindi film collection by more than 25%! Heera added 79 movies to its streaming catalog, including a ton of titles from Yash Raj Films and a bunch of interesting older fare. Highlights include Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…Ishaqzaade, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. I’m inordinately excited that the horror flick Khamoshiyan is now available, just because it gives me an excuse to post a screenshot of one of the movie’s many amazing set decorations (seriously, if anyone knows where I can buy this painting, please let me know!):

[Update: The scoop from Sofia on Twitter is that these may not be “new” additions, as they’ve all been available to her since she subscribed last month. They only appeared in my results on Saturday, and I check Heera’s catalog everyday. Hrmmm…]

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with two new additions to the catalog. The animated film Motu Patlu: King of Kings is now available for streaming, as is the 2016 Hollywood biographical drama Lion (which is a real tear-jerker). For everything else new on Netflix — Bollywood or not — check Instant Watcher.

Movie Review: Khamoshiyan (2015)

The Hindi word Khamoshiyan (“Silences“) sort of sounds like the English word “commotion,” which is fitting given the insane way this sexy horror film spins out of control.

Frustrated novelist Kabir (Ali Fazal) hits rock bottom when he tries to sabotage his ex-girlfriend’s wedding. She tells him, “You’re an incomplete man, Kabir. You could never complete anything in your life.” He hits the road, resolving to finally finish his book and find a purpose.

Kabir winds up at a mountain lodge which he describes as being “locked in time,” even though the building looks like a newly built McMansion. There are no other guests at the hotel, only the inn’s beautiful caretaker Meera (Sapna Pabbi) and her bedridden husband.

During his first night in the hotel, Kabir hears phantom sounds, sees figures disappear from paintings, and a poltergeist throws at book at him. He packs his bag the next morning, and we hope he’s smart enough to get the hell out of this obviously haunted house. Nope. He’s just going for a hike.

Bewitched by her pretty face and mysterious manners, Kabir resolves to uncover Meera’s secrets. He has no way of knowing what bizarre horrors haunt the inn.

That’s because the narrative takes a left turn into crazy town in the second half. You will think that you have the story figured out. “Duh, she’s a ghost,” you will say. You will be wrong. Not even writer Vikram Bhatt knows how he reached the film’s conclusion.

Now, that doesn’t mean that Khamoshiyan isn’t fun, because it is. Meera gets it on with Kabir and — in flashbacks — her husband, Jaidev (Gurmeet Choudhary). Kabir fights ridiculous CGI dogs and flops around possessed. The hotel has some amazing evil artwork, because what says “Welcome!” better than a hideous painting of a muscular chimera in the foyer?

Where the movie falls short is in its application of a coherent mythology. There don’t seem to be any rules governing the movie’s supernatural entities. It’s unclear how to destroy them, since certain rituals work and others don’t without explanation.

It’s also unclear what motivates the spirits. Meera makes it clear that — for the sake of her husband — she’s not allowed to leave the hotel grounds. Yet the spirits don’t seem to have a problem with her humping Kabir on the hood of a sports car in the garage.

What results is a disorganized collection of occult imagery that is more confusing than horrifying. Most of the attempted chills take the form of telegraphed poltergeist effects. The mood is intermittently pretty creepy, however, and director Karan Darra deserves credit for trying to make butterflies scary.

For all its incoherence, Khamoshiyan is undeniably entertaining. Good looking people make out, and some mildly spooky stuff happens. What more do you need?
