Streaming Video News: November 2, 2016

I updated my lists of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime and Bollywood movies on Netflix. Amazon recently removed the cricket documentary Beyond All Boundaries from its free streaming catalog. Netflix just added two documentaries to its offerings: 2014’s Walking with Wolves and 2015’s In Their Shoes, a film by Aurangzeb director Atul Sabharwal.

One Hindi film on Netflix is worth prioritizing before it expires. 2013’s Siddharth departs the catalog on November 7, 2016. Not only is it a wonderful, heartbreaking film, but it opened my eyes to the way we take money for granted in the movies. The characters in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil can gallivant all over Europe in private jets because they are filthy rich. What if you are dirt poor, and your son goes missing in a distant city? That’s the dilemma faced by the family in Siddharth. It’s really a movie worth your time.

Streaming Video News: October 12, 2016

Two bits of streaming video news today, both involving the loss of content. Netflix is set to lose two Bollywood films from 2014 in the next few days: Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania on October 15 and Bhoothnath Returns on October 17. Humpty is worth prioritizing not only because it’s good but because its sequel — Badrinath Ki Dulhania — is scheduled to release next year.

In other news, Amazon Prime dumped nearly a quarter of its free Indian films last week. Unfortunately, the 22 movies that were lost were many of the best Bollywood titles available on the service, including Kai Po Che!, Siddharth, and Wake Up Sid.

Though this is obviously just the result of a batch of contracts reaching their termination date, it feels like a sign of lean times ahead at the service. Amazon Prime rarely adds Bollywood content to its free library, and the movies that are available are older or of little renown. Amazon Prime offers just three titles released since 2014, and the lone 2015 film isn’t even listed at IMDb. Point being, the Indian films available for free with Amazon Prime are a nice perk but not reason alone to sign up for the service.

Streaming Video News: September 1, 2016

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with some new additions to the streaming catalog, the most recognizable of which is Miss Lovely, which I thought was okay. Also new are the 2009 drama 99 and Placebo, a documentary about the intense pressure of medical school in India. Two British travel series — India’s Frontier Railways and India’s Lost Worlds — were also added. [Update: I just noticed on Instant Watcher that the lauded 2014 Pakistani drama Dukhtar was also added.]

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime as well. The two new additions include 2004’s Iqbal and 2005’s Aitraaz, starring Priyanka Chopra, Akshay Kumar, and Kareena Kapoor Khan.

New Bollywood Movies on Amazon Prime Page

I’m excited to introduce a new page at Access Bollywood that features a list of all of the Bollywood movies streaming for free with an Amazon Prime membership. You can find links to the new page in the header menu and in the left sidebar. If you’re not already an Amazon Prime member, click here to try it for free for 30 days.

Amazon’s Instant Video catalog is a challenge to navigate. Within the Prime Video: Bollywood subcategory, sort options are limited to “Featured” and “Newest Arrivals.” Also, titles are frequently misspelled, and the dates listed are often the date the film released digitally, not its theatrical release date. I’ve streamlined the (at present) 90+ titles into an alphabetical list, with correct spellings and release dates.

Amazon Prime’s Bollywood catalog skews older than the Netflix Bollywood catalog, though some recent releases like 2013’s Kai Po Che! are available. There are great older titles like Dil Se and plenty of movies featuring early performances by some of today’s biggest stars. If you’re in the mood to marathon some of Akshay Kumar’s late ’90s Khiladi films, you’re in luck.

Creating this page and making sure all of the information is correct has been a massive undertaking, months in the making. Keeping the information current will likewise require painstaking work. Have a great Memorial Day weekend!
