New Netflix Feature: Browse by Languages

Advertisements

Netflix recently launched a “Browse by Languages” tool to help filter content within their massive catalog. This is actually a useful feature for every subscriber, but it’s especially important as Netflix tries to expand their subscriber base outside of majority-English-speaking countries. Let’s see what this new filtering and sorting tool can do!

At the time of this writing, this feature is only available while viewing Netflix in a web browser. On the Browse by Languages page, users are presented with three dropdown menus next to the phrase “Select Your Preferences.” The first dropdown menu allows users to choose between “Original Language,” “Dubbing,” and “Subtitles.”

Screenshot of the sorting options available with Netflix's Browse by Languages tool

The second menu allows users to choose from a list of dozens of languages, including Bengali, Hindi, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu. Netflix offers movies in other Indian languages that aren’t included in the “Browse by” tool, so check my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix to see what Indian and Pakistani films and shows Netflix offers in Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Punjabi, and Urdu.

The third “Sort by” menu allows users to organize results by “Suggestions for You,” “Year Released,” “A-Z,” and “Z-A.” The Netflix algorithm selects the display order when “Suggestions for You” is selected. Choosing “Year Released” displays content in reverse chronological order, starting with the newest releases.

Note that changing a selection in a menu resets the menus to its right to their default settings. If the left-most menu is set to “Original Language” and you choose “Dubbing,” it resets the “Language” and “Sort by” menus to their defaults of “English” and “Suggestions for You.” If you change the language, it resets “Sort by” to “Suggestions for You.”

There is no ability to filter the content to choose only movies or TV series, making this tool only so useful for languages with a large catalog presence like English or Hindi. (Although apparently a lot of users have been looking for a way to exclude non-English titles from their searches, according to What’s on Netflix.) What the tool is best for is showing a wider array of options than might be first apparent for languages with a smaller catalog footprint.

The tool is also good about accurately displaying titles under their “Original Language.” Netflix has a quirk whereby some Indian movies have dubbed versions that have to be selected from within the film’s audio options menu (like the Tamil movie Don), while other Indian movies get separate catalog ID numbers for every audio version of the film. The movie Kurup has five distinct catalog IDs: one for the original Malayalam, plus dubbed versions in Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu. Thankfully, the new “Browse by Languages” tool only displays Kurup when Malayalam is selected as the “Original Language.”

One exception is Baahubali, which appears under “Original Language” whether English, Hindi, Malayalam, or Tamil are selected. But Baahubali is the exception to many rules.

Overall, this tool is a really welcome addition to Netflix’s website. Anything that helps users find and organize content by their preferred language — and with the additional ability to display the most recently added content first — gives Netflix an advantage over competing streaming services.

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with today’s addition of the 2019 Tamil film Magamuni and yesterday’s debut of the Netflix Original true crime series Indian Predator: The Butcher of Delhi. The 2022 Telugu movie F3: Fun and Frustration becomes available for streaming on the 22nd, followed by Gulshan Devaiah’s thriller Foot Fairy on the 24th (in both Hindi and Marathi).

Netflix is set to lose a bunch of popular Hindi movies on August 1. Here’s a list of what’s on the way out, ordered from best to worst (click on the star-rating to ready my review):

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Hulu with a new season of the Telugu series Parampara.

Finally, I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with today’s addition of the Hindi film JugJugg Jeeyo, which released in theaters June 24. Look for the Punjabi film Sher Bagga to arrive on Prime on the 24th and R. Madhavan’s directorial debut Rocketry: The Nambi Effect on the 25th.

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with today’s additions of the Tamil comedy Sarbath and the Hindi/English coming-of-age film Skater Girl. The skatepark that was constructed in Rajasthan for the filming of Skater Girl was left up and is free for public use.

This month’s paucity of new Indian releases got me wondering about the fate of the titles from Netflix’s big March 3 announcement of their slate of upcoming projects. The announcement included 13 feature films, 15 new and returning series, and 13 unscripted movies, series, and comedy specials.

Five of the films — Ajeeb Daastaans, The Disciple, Milestone, Pagglait, and Sardar Ka Grandson — have released so far, with Jagame Thandhiram and Haseen Dillruba set to join them in the coming weeks. Bombay Begums and Ray (coming out later this month) are the only series to be added. Two unscripted titles have been released as well: Searching for Sheela and The Big Day, Collection 2. In all, that’s only 11 of 41 titles accounted for.

Even though fiction series made up the bulk of the titles announced, only two have gotten release dates. I’m not sure if this was always the plan or if this is a result of pandemic-related production delays. It could be the former — a series starring Mike Myers just started filming, two years after it was announced — but recent COVID-19 shutdowns had to affect at least some of the shows (not to mention the five stand-up comedy specials that were announced).

Despite a whole lineup of series and shows, could this month’s anemic offerings be the start of an Indian content drought at Netflix? The answer is… maybe? Most of 2021’s few theatrical releases — like Roohi and Madam Chief Minister — are already on Netflix or another streaming service. But maybe the titles from the March 3 announcement are further along in production than I assume. Still, I won’t be surprised if Netflix starts throwing cash at distributors to acquire some of the titles that have been waiting for a theatrical release since last spring. The theatrical release calendar is awfully crowded, and several movies have been postponed more than once. Might be time for distributors to cash in and help bulk up Netflix’s catalog.

Hotstar has today’s other new Hindi feature release: the road trip musical Shaadisthan.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with a handful of Indian titles that have been added in the last week. I’m undertaking a massive weeding effort on the Amazon page, pulling entries that are no longer available free with a Prime membership. By the time I’m done, the page will be less than half the length of its peak several months ago.

Have a nice weekend!

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with today’s big announcement of more than 40 new Indian movies, TV series, and specials that Netflix plans to release in 2021. Many of these titles were previously announced — I wrote about a number of them for my 2021 Netflix preview for What’s On Netflix — but some are brand new. I’ll go into detail about each of the different categories, but first check out this general teaser video Netflix India released:

First up is movies. Today’s announcement includes 13 titles. Netflix had already announced a March 26 premiere date for Pagglait and released teaser videos for Dhamaka and Jagame Thandhiram. The Karan Johar-produced anthology film which had been called The Other is renamed Ajeeb Daastaans. Three films that I previewed in my piece for What’s On Netflix mentioned above were not included in today’s announcement: Cobalt Blue, Desert Dolphin, and Freedom. Here are all the movies included in today’s press release (Hindi-language, unless otherwise specified) with links to their Netflix entries where available, followed by another video specifically focused on Original films:

The bulk of today’s announcement was made up of fiction TV series, including 9 brand new shows and new seasons of 6 returning series. Bombay Begums already has a March 8 premiere date. The series starring Madhuri Dixit Nene that was rumored to be called Actress is officially titled Finding Anamika. Baahubali: Before the Beginning was conspicuously absent from today’s announcement, as were updates on new seasons for Hashmukh and Selection Day. Here are all of the TV series mentioned in the press release, followed by a video featuring highlights from those series:

Finally, Netflix announced 13 non-fiction movies, series, and stand-up comedy specials. No word on a second season of Indian Matchmaking, but The Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives and The Big Day are both returning. Here are the Unscripted Originals coming to Netflix in 2021.

I’ll update my Netflix page as soon as release dates for these titles are announced. Get those watchlists ready, people!

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with today’s world premiere of the thriller The Girl on the Train, based on the book by Paula Hawkins. The Hindi anthology film Zindagi in Short and the Telugu movie Red were also added to Netflix this week. A bunch of Indian titles are set to expire on March 1, so catch these while you can:

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with dozens of Indian films added in the last week, including today’s addition of the 2021 Tamil neo-noir thriller Kabadadaari (also available in 4K UHD).

Hotstar launched a new drama series yesterday — 1962: The War in the Hills, starring Abhay Deol. If that doesn’t float your boat, Hotstar also recently released the horror series Live Telecast and the animated show The Legend of Hanuman. Still no sign of The Big Bull or Bhuj, unfortunately.

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with the new Netflix Original film Bulbbul, from Anushka Sharma’s production company Clean Slate Films. It’s really good, and I hope to have my review up soon. Other new additions this week include the 2020 Telugu movie Krishna and His Leela and the older Hindi releases Vivah and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (which is okay). Netflix also made changes to two films already on the service: Seven and Thackeray. Instead of one entry with a drop-down menu that allowed you to choose the language, Netflix made individual entries for each language version of the movie. Seven is available in Tamil and Telugu, and Thackeray is available in Hindi and Marathi.

Be sure to check out the Expiring Soon section of my Netflix page, as a bunch of movies and series are set to leave Netflix on July 1.

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with dozens of Indian and Pakistani titles added in the last week. Out of nowhere, Prime added the brand new Hindi series Rasbhari (also in 4K UHD), starring Swara Bhaskar. Recently added 2020 releases include Cheema Prema Madhyalo Bhama (Telugu), Janaki Nayakan (Malayalam), and Prawaas (Marathi). Amazon also moved the digital premiere of the Kannada film Law to July 17.

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with more than twenty Indian titles added in the last week, most notably Salman Khan’s Dabangg 3. We’re far enough into the new year for the first 2020 theatrical releases to become available for streaming, including these three Tamil titles from January:

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with the additions of director Ashutosh Gowariker’s 2019 historical drama Panipat and the Netflix Original romance series Taj Mahal 1989. A bunch of Hindi and Marathi titles are set to expire in the next week, so head to my Netflix page to see what’s on the way out.

In other Netflix news, two new Hindi titles of note become available for streaming on February 21, including the Emraan Hashmi-Rishi Kapoor thriller The Body. Also debuting on the 21st is the Netflix Original movie Yeh Ballet, based on a short film of the same name. The feature-length version stars some up-and-coming actors, plus Jim Sarbh and the Warlock himself, Julian Sands!

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with a January 1, 2020, expiration date for twenty Indian films. Most of the expiring titles are Marathi movies, but Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Hum Saath-Saath Hain, and Maine Pyar Kiya are on their way out as well.

The good news is that the number of Hindi films joining Netflix on December 31 has grown to 49. You can check out the full list of titles at my Netflix page, under the “Coming Soon” section. Happy holidays!

I updated my list of Bollywood movies on Amazon Prime with dozens of Indian titles added in the last week, including today’s blockbuster addition of the Hrithik Roshan-Tiger Shroff action extravaganza War, one of my favorite movies of the year. War is now available for streaming in Hindi (standard and 4K UHD) and Telugu (standard and 4K UHD). The Hindi version of Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy is available as well, also in standard and 4K UHD. Other 2019 releases added in the last week include:

It looks like the Excel Entertainment back catalog really is leaving Prime for good on Thursday, November 28. To see a list of all the titles on their way out, scroll past the “Newly Added” section at the top of my Amazon Prime page to find the “Expiring Soon” section, or click here. Bon voyage, Dil Dhadakne Do. [Disclaimer: my Amazon links include an affiliate tag that may earn me a commission on purchases.]

I also updated my list of Bollywood movies on Netflix with the addition of two 2019 releases: the Rajeev Khandelwal-starrer Pranaam and the Telugu film Evvarikee Cheppoddu. Twenty Marathi titles are set to expire from Netflix on December 1, as are Shah Rukh Khan’s Deewana and the excellent drama Masaan. (Half Girlfriend is leaving as well, but you don’t want to watch it.) The expiring titles will be replaced on December 1 by seven Punjabi titles, which you can find listed in the “Coming Soon” section near the top of my Netflix page.

Happy Thanksgiving! — Kathy
