I went to see “The Sky is Pink” on Friday. I went with the normal Bollywood watching couple. My husband was working. My 18 year old didn’t go with me because one review said the movie discussed the s*x life of the parents in detail. Maybe it does in Hindi but not in the subtitles. The only thing from the subtitles was with a very sick kid you probably aren’t getting much.
The couple liked the movie very much. I didn’t think it was really a movie about Aisha. It was about the rest of the family coping with her dying so you want some Kleenex with you. I expected it to be more about Aisha. I was a bit disappointed but if you go in knowing it’s more about dying and choices made during the process than the girl you probably won’t be disappointed. There are scenes like adjusting to moving to where the hospital is. How do you keep the family close when hours away? Should you buy a dog knowing it will worsen their condition but the child wants a dog? Do you move after the death? Should you keep the room the same?
It hasn’t done very well at the box office. I think the confusion of what kind of film do you want to be is why. Even the title helped the confusion because it came from the older brother who colored a picture with the sky pink and was reprimanded by his teacher. The mom says the sky can be any color but what does that have to do with Aisha? Nothing the three of us could tell.
The credits listed Netflix so I think they may end up the streaming partner.
Great observation about the origins of the title, Jill. What a bizarre choice on the part of the filmmakers. And thanks for the heads up about Netflix. I may wait until it shows up there to watch it, although I may skip it due to the subject matter. Movies about death and grieving are generally not my jam.
